Altered States

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep Sea, and music in its roar:
I love not Man the less, but Nature more.”

M | Subbed the stepmill for the erg because of hip flexion. Right side bugging a little from the move. Part B: I see what you did there. Booty burning by the last 5 reps of hip bridges. I would like to conduct a test. Remove all the TVs from the globo and see what occurs…

Tu | Dang starting with pull-ups = prefatigued. BTN press felt stronger than anticipated. Typically aren’t those harder from a seated position than from standing, no? This whole workout was a good practice in preventing straining neck face.

W | An hour of barbell fun! Deficit deadlifts felt really good; why do those weights feel so much easier standing on plate? More/different muscle recruitment? The push press was the limiting factor on the second part, and after all those pull-ups on Tuesday, it’s hard to straighten my arms today. The squats felt solid. No GHD to Roman extensions.

Sa | Favorite.

As you approach the point where Inner Basin Trail hooks up to the Weatherford Trail you get a pretty sweet view – from top down The Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater, Sugarloaf Peak, The Fairy-tail Forest.

fearsome > fearless

“You must understand fear so you can manipulate it. Fear is like fire. You can make it work for you: it can warm you in the winter, cook your food when you’re hungry, give you light when you are in the dark, and produce energy. Let it go out of control and it can hurt you, even kill you… Fear is a friend of exceptional people.” – Cus D’Amato

The Hump(hrey’s)
9.5 mi

M | Unreal sore from Sunday’s squats. I see how that whole hypertrophy training works der, with all the reps. Rolled through an archived workout to alleviate some of that soreness. Subbed overhead walking for the jumping lunges. Random workout observations:  row cadence is tricky when someone is rowing right next to you.

W | New moves: kang squat. Felt those lots in the posterior chain and hammies. Back squats felt good; lots of “finding the glutes” on  reps 4 & 5 – and keeping it explosive on the up – kept me at 130#. The front racks onto a plate – is that core stability work? That’s where I felt it – like keeping the chain connected.

Th | The concentric bench were interesting, and perhaps made easier because the safety supports were a little high (if I put them lower the barbell would have bench resting on my chest). Bench isn’t a strength of mine, so being able to do 3 sets of 5 at 90# surprised me. Reduced time under tension – since you are starting at the bottom? The pull-ups were hard, but felt really good, positionally – as did the dips. Ooh dem bear crawls….

crawlin fierce.gif

Sa | No sooner do I yammer on about the body feeling fucking amazing, then my right hip flexor decides to pretend it’s a glute. Hey, dude! (ya just know it’s a dude) You’re a tiny little guy; you’re not sized to pick up that kinda work. Anyway, that’s why I dropped part “D” and dropped the cossacks (those did NOT feel nice on the right side). Spent some additional time mobilizing that right flexor. We will see what tomorrow brings.

Su | Oh, The Hump. What a great hike! The weather was lovely; no storms, some picture-perfect fluffy clouds, and chilly at the top. Due to some navigational detours I got a later jump than I had planned, but, man, that didn’t take away from the experience at all. Until about 11,000’ up I felt fantastic, breathing good, but not a big deal. But man, shortly after passing the 11,100’ marker it got rough. From the saddle to the summit was very challenging. It took 2:30 to summit and about that (2:15) to descent with a good half hour at the top, taking in the general splendor aaand snacks! The cereal treat bar – Rice Krispies, but sub Cap’n Crunch (Right!? Fuck yeah! Or so I thought…) may not have been the best idea. Shortly thereafter I was pretty sure I was gonna vomit. Buuut I didn’t. Also got a gnarly headache which didn’t resolve itself as quickly as the upset tummy. In hindsight, I’m gonna attribute them both to the altitude.

And if you ever wonder what’s the faster way to go from zen to murder, my answer would be the commute from Flagstaff to Phoenix on Sunday afternoon. The solution: mix tapes and some dirty spice from Late for the Train #tipsfromSavage

“Spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation.” -Robert H. Schuller

I’m not sure I’m going to connect all the dots in this post. Basically, I have some shit I want to get done, and I’ve spent entirely enough time with my own thoughts this weekend. But here goes…

A section of my current read created some imagery that has been ruminating in my mind. The author, discussing the ability of shifting from the subjective to the objective in terms of self, compared that skill to that of zippered costumes:

“By stepping outside ourselves, we gain perspective. We become objectively aware of our costumes rather than subjective fused with them. We realize we can take them off, discard those that are worn out or no longer fit, and even create new ones. That’s the paradox of selflessness – by periodically losing our minds we stand a better chance of finding ourselves.” – Kotler & Wheal, Stealing Fire

I’m not gonna dig deep in the consciousness stuff, I’ve just alice-in-wonderlanded in it myself. But this idea of the subject-object shift came up in a podcast I really enjoyed recently. Idn’t that funny how that works?

The guests in this episode of The Paleo Solution Podcast discuss subject-object awareness as it is applied in movement – specificaly BJJ – and in education and critical thinking. Some of the conversation reminded me of parts of Sam Harris’s, The Pleasure’s of Drowning, so check that out if you listen and are hungry for more.

Is your preparation actually preparing you for the real thing? Are you kata-ing/air-punching at life? Are you applying what you learn? Which illusion are you choosing?

Sa | TGU warm-up to remind myself I am capable of things. Man, that row burned by flutes hard.

Su | Shockingly sore in between the scapula while mob-ing to start. Where’s that from? Perhaps holding on to some tension there. Felt really good to work it out. The squats felt good, but holy “cardio”. The reverse lunges – not heavy in weight, but right in terms of the neural drive. I was feeling the Saturday Cossacks during those. Was super fun to snatch at Globo Mountain, even if it was just the BB. During stretch I learned Christina works in finance, is going to Austin on Wednesday, works primarily with men, sat at a desk for 10 years, and got her outfit on sale from Old Navy. All without even trying!

What’s your favorite color? But shouldn’t it be called the Emotion Wheel?

I’ve been crushing on all things Training Think Tank this week. Despite not giving the slightest of fucks about The CrossFit Games myself, their series The Road to The Games 2017 is entertaining and an excellent source of laughs and gym jams. (And where I eyed the Feeling Wheel for the first time, pinned up behind Max’s desk, which inspired some curiosity on this end – what’s that about and why is it so prominently placed…?) I have been such a groupie that I maybe even bought a tank to rep at Globo Mountain. Future selfie.

In that light, I share with you this episode of The Aussies, interviewing the Mastermind behind TTT, Max-El Haag. They cover aspects of training, like stepping away from the barbell and doing weird shit in order to get better with the barbell (#globocycle), intensity as a distraction and why staying present in your movement is so fucking hard, and lessons on nutrition (I’ll leave you to discover that gem of a quote on your own). But my favorite parts on the conversation were on the other stuff – on training beyond the body, and on not compromising your own nature and instead figuring out how it can serve you.

“I don’t want that to be true; how do I make that not true tomorrow?” -Max El-Haag

What are you training today?

W | Um, get-ups and back squats. Not sure it gets much more up my alley than that. Really had fun with this workout. The most awkward of the session award goes to RNT lunges; that 3s drop be trick-aaay. I was really happy with how the back squats felt; no bad pain anywhere. Worked the heart beat hold with a plate drill between sets as that’s where I find I “give” when I don’t keep my abs braced or fill up the cavity.

Questions for The Sheriff:  This Globo Mountain doesn’t have more than a 30# pair of kettle bells. Would it be better to grab heavier dumbbells, or do single arm or goblet grip with a heavier KB – for the loaded lunges?

Witness Marks

Delicate Dependencies by Crystal Morey

Recently got my grill shined up. The dental hygienist – who’s been cleaning people’s teeth for 34 years – asked how old I was when I wore braces. I asked how she could tell, because it sure isn’t perfect alignment of my teeth (No, I don’t wanna reel that one in! Stop asking #flavorsaver) She said there were subtle marks where the wires had subtly scored my teeth. It got me thinking about people, and how we are an accumulation of witness marks. It makes me curious about what people pick up on. And who we pretend to be.

Sa | Hip bridge holds are no joke. And make for edge-of-your-seat video footage. But seriously, try them and see how good you are at keeping your hips level. The back squats were fun with a mirror. Not sure the last set was “x1” out the bottom… or a full 2-count either. The pull-up machine is gonna lead to some gainz, I am sure of it.

Su | New places of soreness in the lats and booty today.

Had fun testing the barbell at the globo, thank you. Felt super weak with the snatches until it occurred to me that I was using a 20 kilo barbell. Ahh. The fifth set finally felt nice and smooth and fast like they’re intended to be. The pulls felt slow but seemed okay via instant replay, so I stayed at 175#. The machines at Marina Heights are a little different than the ones at the ball park; your seat moves with the contraction. Check out the rocketship.

The leg extensions were SO intense after the barbell work; the curls less so. Also, Marina Heights has stall bars… Forgot to check on the sled.

M | Kinda weird working out at the ball park when there’s a game going on – think fishbowl. The whole place breathes a roar when the plays are good. The modern Colosseum. Rolled through the workout. Cut out “C” due to time restrictions. Lame.

Feeling chubby in the middle; time to reel in the eats and unplug.

612: Accept that you have less control than you want | Paul + Wendy Projects

My assigned Thursday workout scared me. I believe it to be true that I suck at pulling and pushing, so the thought of eeking out some bench press and strict pull-ups, well, I certainly wasn’t “handstands and pistols” kinda pumped about it.

As I stepped up to the rig to add a second assistance band for the pulling portion, I asked myself how I’d worked to change “this” – “this” being that “Motherfucker-I-still-don’t-have-dead-hangs/dread-at-working-through-something-I’m-seriously-terrible-at” feeling?

My answer was honest, but not the one I’d like to be able to give in response: not much. I hadn’t been working on it. Going through the motions (by, say, overhead pressing some light lbs you know you can nail, shrouded in the safety of the “proper form” umbrella – which is absolutely important, but also an easy scapegoat) isn’t the same as working toward something, Gunz. You know this.

And that, my friends, is how six banded pull-ups lead me to question my existence, over a few rounds of scotch.

The end.

Tyrion FTW.gif

Haha! Just jokes! Though I did call it a night at the gymnasium. Revelations are exhausting; as is watching a group of clueless souls follow a mind-blowing 1-10-1-10… prescribed back squat rep scheme in the “XF” class. Know when to say when, indeed. Or when to ask questions…)

Walking away from that failed Thursday workout, I realized that I need to reacquaint myself with my fears. And instead of conveniently forgetting them, keep them on-deck, and use them bitches for my benefit.

This nugget from Max at the TTT sure was helpful. I like how he describes himself as being “intimate” with is fears, applying a positive connotation with something many of us like to keep in the shadows.

Along the lines of finding and acknowledging our hidden drivers, this read by James Clear on the schemas is pretty great too; our underlying beliefs persist – and have the potential to seriously hold us back.

How would you re-tell the legend of “The War of the Ghosts”? What are your “Save As” Schemas that shape your narrative?

Saturday | That transition from pressing to heaving is trippy as fuck – getting my lats to fire fast. Baby PR on the snatch. Since it’s Open season we might be tempted to call that a squat snatch. Laaaaawd.

Sunday | A second attempt of Thursday’s workout. Felt much better. I want some science on why the AD rides so differently from the assault bike: the OG AD has me feelin’ it in my hammies and my quads, not ALL quad like on the ass(ault) bike – ironically named. Hmm.

Pull-ups are my nemesis, but just like with the last one… I will conquer you, nemesis! Here’s some footage and analysis to start the siege:

Monday | Walked away from the back squats wondering if I should have done the sets across and/or heavier. I was expecting to feel more fatigued by the last set than I did. That second sip of air is like a switch to the glutes. I’m thinking it must keep me more up right and then those guys stay engaged better…? But I might merely be suffering from delusional cognitive bias. Tricky.

M | The squats felt really good. Looked like I had a hint of ass wink primarily on the first rep. Not sure about my ROM on the hammie curls; it feels a little short. Added some handstand walks at the end because they felt so effortless on Saturday and I wanted to test that.

Tu | Check. All ladies bars in use; subbed a big one (heh!) for the duration. This made for some fun re-gripping on the snatches. Might have to do that again.

W | So much booty soreness from Tuesday’s sesh. On the back end of that workout I was questioning whether I’d used enough weight on the forward pressing components. The soreness in my lats and chest reminds me it’s not just about the lbs.

Cue of the Day from the Skipper: Stand up straight, arms at your side, feel squat distance apart. Now lean forward and come up on your toes, paying attention to what muscles are engaging as you do this. Lean backwards doing the same. Now go back and forth, and feel the transition from quad to glute. Now consider the top of your pull and how these two relate.

Excited to test the PAP this cycle. Despite not falling on to the fast twitch portion of the continuum, maybe AT ALL, testing will be fun. Already has me considering how it is I think about exploding out of the bottom. Are you actually moving fast or are thinking you’re moving fast? Let’s do both.
