Moving Mix Tape

“If you don’t bite you can’t eat.” -Carl Paoli talking theft on Barbell Shrugged

A proper mix tape can’t hurt, bro

I spent a good chunk of my “free time” this week/end unpacking from the move. Lemme tell ya, this has already taken me longer than anticipated – searching for some Mary Poppins type voodoo to move it along a little. Until then, at least there are podcasts.

Here’s a selection of my weekend mix tape for your listening pleasure:

Mind Muscle Project – The After Show #59 >>> On how CrossFit HQ’s drug testing seems shadyAF followed by a dude that has me thinking it’d be good to do some quiet running

Training Think Tank – Q&A Part IV | Enjoy your fucking brownies, folks! Max references Bruce Lipton’s, The Biology of Belief, and poses the question of how thinking ‘I’m a fat piece of shit’ vs ‘I’m fueling my muscles’ might impact your stress hormone profile post-brownie – not to mention flavuh

Waking Up – Facing the Crowd | Words are not violence.
“We use our words so as not to kill each other.” –Greg Lukianoff

Training Think Tank – Q&A Part III | Recovery: you’re missing the basics (It’s not about the stim) and the cost of high-level performance for teens in any sport followed by some teenage El-Haag background

MTN RDY – Colin O’Brady | From everybody’s default fitness test – the triathalon – to a world record-setting run at the Explorer’s Grand Slam. I am so curious about the logistics behind this, and the training involved

Case File | If you can’t get to sleep, this wont’ help

Any podcast recommendations out there? And will someone please invent an app that lets a listener share a snippet of a podcast?! How does this not exist already? Or does it…?

I see what you did there with the holds and then the pin squats… #bootyblast

fake news.gif

Dug the single arm push presses. Interesting to see how one side braces compared to the other. Subbed seated cable rows because someone had set up camp at the lat station.

W | No notes. Felt nice.

Th | Feeling the focus of the recent training: much back fatigue. Z presses were challenging at the rep scheme. The single-arm snatches felt slow; took vid to investigate. They were fine. All in your head, Mo-gunz. Bench: so much room for improvement. Crazy how different incline feels to standard. Still figuring out the barbell situation at the indie gymnasium – used one that felt heavier and thicker. Could have also just been in my head. Really liked part C. D was fun, too; laughed at my retard left side with the BU KBs.

Sa | Got to wear my lifters.

Su | Pre-workout weigh-in: 152.8 lbs. Huh. Press felt good – really connected and pushing through the ground. That part B felt like AD sprints. Ooh burn.

M | Subbed the stepmill for the erg because of hip flexion. Right side bugging a little from the move. Part B: I see what you did there. Booty burning by the last 5 reps of hip bridges. I would like to conduct a test. Remove all the TVs from the globo and see what occurs…

Tu | Dang starting with pull-ups = prefatigued. BTN press felt stronger than anticipated. Typically aren’t those harder from a seated position than from standing, no? This whole workout was a good practice in preventing straining neck face.

W | An hour of barbell fun! Deficit deadlifts felt really good; why do those weights feel so much easier standing on plate? More/different muscle recruitment? The push press was the limiting factor on the second part, and after all those pull-ups on Tuesday, it’s hard to straighten my arms today. The squats felt solid. No GHD to Roman extensions.

Sa | Favorite.

As you approach the point where Inner Basin Trail hooks up to the Weatherford Trail you get a pretty sweet view – from top down The Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater, Sugarloaf Peak, The Fairy-tail Forest.

I got owned by work today and didn’t get a chance to finish my thoughts on the post I was planning to share with you today, friends. So, instead, as a nod to all the storming, you get a monsoon-y quote and some words to suck on. (Too much? Welcome to summer in the desert.)

The Moment
by Margaret Atwood

The moment when, after many years
of hard work and a long voyage
you stand in the centre of your room,
house, half-acre, square mile, island, country,
knowing at last how you got there,
and say, I own this,

is the same moment when the trees unloose
their soft arms from around you,
the birds take back their language,
the cliffs fissure and collapse,
the air moves back from you like a wave
and you can’t breathe.

No, they whisper. You own nothing.
You were a visitor, time after time
climbing the hill, planting the flag, proclaiming.
We never belonged to you.
You never found us.
It was always the other way round.

W | Weird rapid heart rate on the bike – too much coffee? Abs on the suitcase carry had me woke. Worked on a slower more controlled mount to HS – starting with hands on floor.

Th | Bench felt weak, but it’s been a while… not a whole lot of forward pressing in my life right now. Same with the pull-ups. They made me a little grumpy. “Hmm, what’s that about?”, she asks herself. Favorite segment (not that I need to hand out awards for my workouts) was the D. The crossover step-ups were sweet and revealing. Also, made you look globo-ers.

F | Subbed time on the bike for the erg due to some lower back fatigue. Subbed FLR for the bear crawl because the turf area was bangin’ (or other appropriate slang term).

Sa | Sore in some new regions of the glutes from the crossover’s I do believe…

Light week – going by feel. The sled work on Wednesday was legit hard – lots of heavy breathing – or effort to manage it.

First time ever doing the single-arm dumbbell snatches. Focused on keeping the shoulders in alignment per the M&M #nofire

Warming up for Saturday Oly I was totally able to trace the tightness from my back to hip as I moved into a squat – which lead me to turn those snatches into powers. Collecting data…

The adductors! The fab five muscles make up what we know as groin musculature and often undervalued in terms of the role in performance and human movement and often overlooked as well. They attach to the inner portions of the thigh and also to the pelvis at different locations. The longus, brevis and magnus attach more anteriorly whereas the pectineus and gracilis attach more posteriorly and part of the anterior oblique subsystem and lateral subsystem, and powerful muscles with many aspects of stabilization especially during walking. They are also direct antagonists to glute max, TFL and glute medius. These son-a-bitches can either be facilitated or inhibited depending on many factors. —————————————————– For example , if the glutes are on vacation and not functioning properly (happens all the time), The hamstrings often take over the primary work of the glutes to extend the hip. This creates strain particularly on adductors to adduct the hip because the glutes are inhibited. The most common groin pulls are (pectineus, adductor longus/brevis). They are also analogous to tibialis posterior and peroneal's roll and stabilizing the ankle during frontal plane movement, and my fav, also involved in eccentric deceleration and aspects of rotation. —————————————————– If adductors are dysfunctionally or chronically tight, they will always battle with the glutes or other musculature and won't allow the pelvis to get out of large anterior tilt with internal rotation and will cause issues throughout the chain and even create knee pain as well. In most cases the adductors are overworking (facilitated). Release adductors if you have a hip pain, knee pain and groin pain, but first find out why they are overworking in the first place. #muscles #movement #performance #anatomy #strength #awesome #flex #coach #knowledge #gains #instadaily #picoftheday #glutes #squats #athlete #results #rehab #lifting #science #lifestyle #gym #workout #training #strong #bodybuilding #powerlifting #fitness #exercise #health #followme

Save As

typing612p
612: Accept that you have less control than you want | Paul + Wendy Projects

My assigned Thursday workout scared me. I believe it to be true that I suck at pulling and pushing, so the thought of eeking out some bench press and strict pull-ups, well, I certainly wasn’t “handstands and pistols” kinda pumped about it.

As I stepped up to the rig to add a second assistance band for the pulling portion, I asked myself how I’d worked to change “this” – “this” being that “Motherfucker-I-still-don’t-have-dead-hangs/dread-at-working-through-something-I’m-seriously-terrible-at” feeling?

My answer was honest, but not the one I’d like to be able to give in response: not much. I hadn’t been working on it. Going through the motions (by, say, overhead pressing some light lbs you know you can nail, shrouded in the safety of the “proper form” umbrella – which is absolutely important, but also an easy scapegoat) isn’t the same as working toward something, Gunz. You know this.

And that, my friends, is how six banded pull-ups lead me to question my existence, over a few rounds of scotch.

The end.

Tyrion FTW.gif

Haha! Just jokes! Though I did call it a night at the gymnasium. Revelations are exhausting; as is watching a group of clueless souls follow a mind-blowing 1-10-1-10… prescribed back squat rep scheme in the “XF” class. Know when to say when, indeed. Or when to ask questions…)

Walking away from that failed Thursday workout, I realized that I need to reacquaint myself with my fears. And instead of conveniently forgetting them, keep them on-deck, and use them bitches for my benefit.

This nugget from Max at the TTT sure was helpful. I like how he describes himself as being “intimate” with is fears, applying a positive connotation with something many of us like to keep in the shadows.

Along the lines of finding and acknowledging our hidden drivers, this read by James Clear on the schemas is pretty great too; our underlying beliefs persist – and have the potential to seriously hold us back.

How would you re-tell the legend of “The War of the Ghosts”? What are your “Save As” Schemas that shape your narrative?

Saturday | That transition from pressing to heaving is trippy as fuck – getting my lats to fire fast. Baby PR on the snatch. Since it’s Open season we might be tempted to call that a squat snatch. Laaaaawd.

Sunday | A second attempt of Thursday’s workout. Felt much better. I want some science on why the AD rides so differently from the assault bike: the OG AD has me feelin’ it in my hammies and my quads, not ALL quad like on the ass(ault) bike – ironically named. Hmm.

Pull-ups are my nemesis, but just like with the last one… I will conquer you, nemesis! Here’s some footage and analysis to start the siege:

Monday | Walked away from the back squats wondering if I should have done the sets across and/or heavier. I was expecting to feel more fatigued by the last set than I did. That second sip of air is like a switch to the glutes. I’m thinking it must keep me more up right and then those guys stay engaged better…? But I might merely be suffering from delusional cognitive bias. Tricky.

Tu | The legs seemed to have recovered from Saturday’s sled-sprints. I really like this workout, it’s sneaky hard; begin anything by squishing your guts and making breathing awkward and I suppose that sets the tone for the rest of the work to be done.

W | Can I blame my long ass arms for sucking so much on the forward pressing? I know; excuses. Wednesday was a humbling workout for sure. And with some insights into how recovered I was during the warm-up, struggling to string the DUs together. Muscle snatches felt strong. Bench did not – right side slow to finish at fatigue set in. The Fast AF push-ups… eh, not so fast, but the most I could muster.

Th | Sneaked in a back squat PR! That made me feel pretty nice. Really sore from all the pressing. Subbed some hinging for the Rx squatting because my legs were jello from the first two sections. Focused on moving the KB with intention; are you gonna ask it, or tell it?

M | The squats felt really good. Looked like I had a hint of ass wink primarily on the first rep. Not sure about my ROM on the hammie curls; it feels a little short. Added some handstand walks at the end because they felt so effortless on Saturday and I wanted to test that.

Tu | Check. All ladies bars in use; subbed a big one (heh!) for the duration. This made for some fun re-gripping on the snatches. Might have to do that again.

W | So much booty soreness from Tuesday’s sesh. On the back end of that workout I was questioning whether I’d used enough weight on the forward pressing components. The soreness in my lats and chest reminds me it’s not just about the lbs.

Cue of the Day from the Skipper: Stand up straight, arms at your side, feel squat distance apart. Now lean forward and come up on your toes, paying attention to what muscles are engaging as you do this. Lean backwards doing the same. Now go back and forth, and feel the transition from quad to glute. Now consider the top of your pull and how these two relate.

Excited to test the PAP this cycle. Despite not falling on to the fast twitch portion of the continuum, maybe AT ALL, testing will be fun. Already has me considering how it is I think about exploding out of the bottom. Are you actually moving fast or are thinking you’re moving fast? Let’s do both.
