Future Past

“The mind is a curious thing. The reason why we sometimes find ourselves in awe of moments as they are happening is because the mind never lives in the present, the body does. But the mind shifts between what the body has left behind and what’s yet to come.” -Sidd Long

Light week – going by feel. The sled work on Wednesday was legit hard – lots of heavy breathing – or effort to manage it.

First time ever doing the single-arm dumbbell snatches. Focused on keeping the shoulders in alignment per the M&M #nofire

Warming up for Saturday Oly I was totally able to trace the tightness from my back to hip as I moved into a squat – which lead me to turn those snatches into powers. Collecting data…

The adductors! The fab five muscles make up what we know as groin musculature and often undervalued in terms of the role in performance and human movement and often overlooked as well. They attach to the inner portions of the thigh and also to the pelvis at different locations. The longus, brevis and magnus attach more anteriorly whereas the pectineus and gracilis attach more posteriorly and part of the anterior oblique subsystem and lateral subsystem, and powerful muscles with many aspects of stabilization especially during walking. They are also direct antagonists to glute max, TFL and glute medius. These son-a-bitches can either be facilitated or inhibited depending on many factors. —————————————————– For example , if the glutes are on vacation and not functioning properly (happens all the time), The hamstrings often take over the primary work of the glutes to extend the hip. This creates strain particularly on adductors to adduct the hip because the glutes are inhibited. The most common groin pulls are (pectineus, adductor longus/brevis). They are also analogous to tibialis posterior and peroneal's roll and stabilizing the ankle during frontal plane movement, and my fav, also involved in eccentric deceleration and aspects of rotation. —————————————————– If adductors are dysfunctionally or chronically tight, they will always battle with the glutes or other musculature and won't allow the pelvis to get out of large anterior tilt with internal rotation and will cause issues throughout the chain and even create knee pain as well. In most cases the adductors are overworking (facilitated). Release adductors if you have a hip pain, knee pain and groin pain, but first find out why they are overworking in the first place. #muscles #movement #performance #anatomy #strength #awesome #flex #coach #knowledge #gains #instadaily #picoftheday #glutes #squats #athlete #results #rehab #lifting #science #lifestyle #gym #workout #training #strong #bodybuilding #powerlifting #fitness #exercise #health #followme

In Contrast

“Put light against light – you have nothing. Put dark against dark – you have nothing. It’s the contrast of light and dark that give the other one meaning.” -Bob Ross

And here we have some contrast, of style or talent,  you be the judge. This is a work by Asger Jorn of the Situationist movement, I think. Hey, we’re not just butts and barbells around here, nah meh? (But mostly we are…)

And here’s an interesting podcast on how we think of our current selves in contrast to our future selves and how that fucks up our decision-making skills. I believe we call that projection bias.

And in case I deterred you with the duck up there, here’s some additional contrast:

Ah contrast. I was feeling so awesome before and during the Humphrey’s hike…

The intention this week was to do some moving and see what the response was in the hip-/back-/ass-on-the-funky-side region. So, yeah, did that. Really wanting to squat, but we had a reverse “Bump N’ Grind” situation: my mind was telling me yes, but my body, my booody was telling me no! So, what can I do to work da booty (okay, and the body) that isn’t squatting? Pulled some things from the archives… And things are feeling better, but some tightness remains in the back and in the hip when in the R-Kelly position.

Every time there’s a “rest a minute between legs” in my workout, my mind puts a “my” after the preposition and the gutter brain takes it from there…

spend some time there.gif

Gonna give Oly a try tomorrow. We’ll see if I’m walking funny after…

Lightning Bolts

“The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.” – Henry David Thoreau

I decided to quit some things this weekend. They were pretty much lightning bolt decisions. So, here’s an article about quitting things. I’m definitely not quitting DTP or training, but I can relate to the idea of quitting something that you feel defines you.

Saturday | Oly class went well, though my shoulder wasn’t very happy Sunday. Maybe a little too much overhead work. Working on turning my elbows back in the catch position, whilst also transitioning out of the hook grip. Tricky. But fun. Played around with some press to handstand progressions after class.

After listening to this week’s BBS, I’m thinking like I should be incorportating some hollow position work into my warm-up. Do all the things! (And if you ever doubted that misogyny and sexism still exist, check out some of those comments on You Tube. No way if those were two bros, would such things be said.)

Friday | Didn’t go crazy on the DLs as the back was still a little  tight. No, Salt-N-Pepa, do not push it.

Snatch-grip rows were a little awkward. Really had to resist the urge to shrug on the right side by the last set. The banded march things were legit. In theory, should a person be able to keep the hips totally level and still? Or is it fine if your hips shift some, provided you are keeping your hips up?

Wednesday | Skipped the jerks on the C+Js. Changing my grip on the barbell during front squats has changed my life. Or at least my front squat.

Monday + Tuesday | Nothing to report. TGUs are the best.

Clean Eatin’, Dirty Thinkin’

“I am not a snob; it is simply that I am not interested with what most people have to say, or what they want to do – mostly with my time.” – Charles Bukowski, Notes of a Dirty Old Man

pink wine and whisky

I’m one week in with Two Grand, a new-to-me app for logging your eats and developing new habits. So far, I am having a lot of fun with it! Anyone else a sucker for a reason to take pics? Anyone? I signed up thinking it would be interesting to have a visual timeline of my eating habits, or rather, “I wonder how many times in a month I actually… eat out/ indulge in an entire pint of McConnell’s Salted Caramel Chip Ice Cream/ purchase cups of delight (espresso)”… You get the idea.

I really like the app, which is similar to other social media apps in that you can follow and be followed (when you put it that way !?!). I’m currently stalking a few folks, other ladies who lift, fellow paleoites, and a couple people with fun handles, but foremost, I’m in for me.

Beyond seeing what other people consume, it’s interesting to see the words folks assign to their pics. Ranging from the obvious, “lunch,” to the specific, “one ounce of gluten-free, grass-fed cheese from a goat named Ralph located on the northern slope of Mount BFE,” you can pick up a lot from what people say about their visuals. Bottom line, and yet again, we are all here for different reasons, with different goals and different definitions of health.

Two Grand in the background, I came across an article that addresses what has to be the most annoying word ever assigned to food. “Clean is for underwear, not food,” covers it all; the primary point being the term itself, “clean eating,” is ambiguous and inherently judgmental. And it kicks off with a pair of superhero BGPs. AND the author, Lacy Davis, says fuck a lot. We could totally be friends.

So, eat the clean food. Eat the dirty food. If you want a cookie, eat a cookie. And sweet baby Jesse, just say no to the pucks of suffering!

Now, to the dirty thoughts. Yeah, that was just an easy title. So those are all you, friend. Should you need some inspiration, I give you John Hamm. Have at it!

Monday | Started the day with a jaunt to the top of “A” Mtn.

IMG_1990
From the top of Tempe Butte: Summer is… here.

During the first EMOM of the day – with the 1-1/4 squats – I really had to focus on keeping the right glute engaged through that third rep. Took a few rounds to catch myself, and then a couple to correct it. The death march was awesome like it sounds. Can’t believe how much those work the glutes, hammies, back AND abs. Those things are quickly becoming one of my favorite movements. TGUs still win. I’m rambling… On the walk walk EMOM I did 2 reps each minute for the first five and 1 rep on the last five rounds. The shoulders were getting questionably fatigued.

Tuesday | Woke up with some seriously sore hammies and glutes, which persisted through Wednesday morning…

nailed it broad city
Broad City: my new favorite. Strong glutes & hammies make you the bitch in the suit. Mmm hmm

I really wanted to get up to the 140’s on the power cleans, but I felt a little beat up so just went with it. Worked up to 125# on the push press which I was happy with. And I was able to do the GHRs with my hands behind my head, not at my chest which is progress. The body rows felt fine on the shoulder. I was able to do the first set of 10 unbroken.

Wednesday | Looked (and felt) recovery-ish, which was delightful.

Thursday | Rest day – Mmm hmm.
