[Un]settle(d)

“Every situation has two handles.” – Epitectus

pay up sucka

I’ve been thinking a lot about relationships lately/endlessly. (High-fucking-fives to all the over-thinkers!) Aren’t long-term relationships a series of trade-offs, really; trading x for y? Security for happiness? Freedom for offspring? A lifestyle upgrade for a clean house and all the sex you want? Fill in your own blanks. No judgement.

At some point, we agree to settle for the another person. (Well, or not. But that’s for another time, friends.) It’s been my experience in conversation that people generally don’t like that term; no one likes to think they “settled”. Maybe why you’ve never heard of this dating site. (Though it might also be that font.) Dan Savage puts it so much better than I can here. How about those lie-selves? Do you think there’s a certain amount of generous pretending in all relationships?

And then there’s Esther. Perel. And the kinder, gentler argument of “compromise” (and the accent helps to, yes?) That’s nicer to take…

in the neck
Perel did a listener Q&A sesh on The Tim Ferriss Show and man, did she shed some light on why online dating doesn’t typically work. Not just because people hate your branding! Ha! Take notes around 23:30… Well, I did. And throw away your lists. I really like how she talks about letting the story develop and unfold, and letting go of expectation.

I’m not sure what my point is here, other than to trade a little of your time for a couple good reads and a quiz – What’s Your Love Style?

I got romantic. Twice. Anyone else keep taking those things ’til you get what you want? No, me neither. But really, what’s your style? If you could pick one of the types, which one would you have selected? Why? Do you appreciate one over another?

Tu | The squats were hard, but I think I could have done them at 150#. The stupid globo racks didn’t allow for the regular zerchers, so I make them all reverse. Can’t stop me with your silly globo racks! Dug the RDLs and really felt the face pulls.

W | So. Much. Soreness. In da booty and ham(mies). Front rack carries are friggin’ awesome – really felt those in the abs and braced breathing efforts. Killed the handstand holds. Hmm… all this back work perhaps?

Th | The soreness continues. DLs felt good. I was surprised at how two hunnit felt from the ground. That’s usually the hardest part. Probably sandbagged those some – same with D2, the push-ups. Why…? The snatch grip DLs were hard being under tension for that long. I like using straps. Been noticing people with the globo editions of those; I’ll keep the Grizzlies.

Sa | Oh man, that round “B” was something. Things felt good. Making freeeinds.

Su | An over-planned weekend left me short on the clock with the Sunday hours at Globo Mountain. After an express foam roam and mobility sesh, I turned part “A” into a warm-up with DUs instead of regular yumps. Fire up dat CNS. Check. Why was I so conservative on those back squats to start!?! Next time, start those bishes at 130, Morgan. They felt solid. All the squats there was a new awareness of bracing in my trunk – feeling my abs engage. Not sure if I was just sore so felt it more or what. The front squats were rough but likely made more so because I totally missed that there was a part C2 there. This is what happens when we hurry…

Choice or Chains?

“Choose not to be harmed and you won’t feel harmed. Don’t feel harmed, and you haven’t been.” –Marcus Aurelius

Kids Getting Hurt might be my favorite thing on the internet right now. (Thanks, Matty Nice!) The (delayed) reactions caught on the record, also interesting; “Is this where I’m supposed to cry?” Nah, kiddos, let’s choose laughter.

On his latest podcast episode, Robb Wolf hit up Gretchen Rubin for a chat about The Four Tendencies. If you’re wondering what the fuck The Four Tendencies are, I don’t know what to tell you. I expected more outta you. That not helpful? Fine. I was just playin’ anyway.

The Four Tendencies is system that identifies different ways people react to expectations. My tendency is Rebel (though I lean a little to the Questioner). Rebel is the tendency of choice. No, not like the meat. That would be Prime.

lots of marbling.gif

According to the framework, Rebels “resist all expectations, outer and inner alike. They act from a sense of choice, from freedom. They resist control, even self-control, and enjoy flouting rules and expectations. They sometimes frustrate others—and even themselves—because they resist any expectation, even one that’s self-imposed. Rebels resist habits, but they can embrace habit-like behaviors by tying their actions to their choices and their identity.”

I think that last line is particularly compelling for me, personally, as I can struggle with doing that to an extreme, chaining myself to one particular identity or another. As someone who is also resistant to change – not just expectation – that can be an issue. Listening to the podcast was a good reminder for me about the importance of owning that knowledge about myself, then taking a step back and looking at a things, people, a situation, and maybe a belief in a different light, from a different perspective.

“Most misunderstandings in the world could be avoided if people would simply take the time to ask, ‘What else could this mean?’” -Shannon L. Alder

So yeah, choice – it’s e’rywhere. What are you choosing at this moment? What are you chaining yourself to?

A: The sofa! It’s football season! (Or did we just go a little BDSM? Pick a safeword. I say “Trump” – if that doesn’t make your dick limp, I don’t know what will.)

W | Deadlifts felt good. It’s crazy how much more I am feeling the pushing through the floor. Felt them a ton in my lats. Then to move onto the kneeling press. Ooh. Had to be mindful of hip positioning with those. Toughest move of the workout were the good mornings. Was curious about my form, but forgot my phone to captcha some footage. The reverse flies are also a weak spot. Ten seem light, but I do a neck thing when I go up to 15#ers, so… Ten it is… For right now.

Th | Pre-training status: feelin’ the posterior chain, particularly the low back and hammies. I enjoyed the sequencing of this session, part A was like a second warm-up. Ish. Those KB RDLs got my QL speaking on the left side. I notice that happens when I do the kangs, too. Noted. I am really feelin’ (both senses) the concentric lifts. And my lifters. Subbed dip holds because there is a serious lack of places to hang from at the globo gyms. DB snatches sure get my heart rate hard.

Sa | It was a nice day for a hike.

Su | It was a nice day to push a sled. I don’t know how much the sled weighs, nor did any of the employees manning the joint. So those numbers posted are the plate weight.

Handstands at home | NFT

Th | Really like the KB EMOMs.

F | Ooh sore from the FS. Recovery things today.

Sa | Ooh sore from all the things. Just put in some work and got the body moving. Not sure why I’m feeling a little beat up this week; Sleeps were solid. Eats, too. Not on the crazy bus. Just listening to my body… Peaks and valleys. Ebbs and flows. Peanut butter and… everything.

Su | Tested hand positioning on the BTNs, and that one-count at the bottom. Yep, it’s way harder when that’s not zero. The heavier KB snatch wasn’t snappy so dropped it back down in lbs and maintained.

On Repeat

smile babe-01.jpg

Prepping for some fresh Game of Thrones by recalling my favorite lines from the last episode: Little Finger dropping some strategy…

Also fitting words having just witnessed the CrossFit Games finale – Mat Fraser on repeat! I wonder how many scenarios he ran through in preparation.

Beyond the Baelish bombs, this episode of Hidden Brain played in my head more than once this past week, as it was a real fight to find my work flow. A contributing factor might be the summer intern – so many (really-good-and-thought-provoking-but-incredibly-distracting!) questions. But, I also attribute the rapidity with which people fire-off emails – and expect a response – to the interference.

AND important.gif
A repeat

I think we all get how distracting being “connected” can be. The new perspective that intrigued me was the message that the phone, the email, the social media itself isn’t necessarily the concern –  it’s our anticipation of them all. Those looping thoughts running in the background, “Has Susan RSVPed to the lunch-n-learn we’re having five weeks from Thursday?”, “Did Joanie see that link I shared which clearly demonstrates publicly my superiority on that thing we were talking about in private?”, “I wonder how likes my post-workout cheese grater hands have accumulated in the last 4 minutes?”. I exaggerate, but you know the ones; those back-burner thoughts that we often aren’t conscious of, that prevent us from taking our thoughts to the next level and getting into “deep work” mode.

I also thought the part about changing your physical environment in order to cut out the distractions was meaty. I’ve never felt more justified in wanting a “deep work” cabin in the woods to disappear to.

It might take some time before I can build my own Olson & Kundig. In the interim, I’m going to explore finding my own place to escape to – who’s got suggestions?! Do you have a place to which you disappear to focus and get shit done? What about that space allows you to do so?

Tu | Tuesdays are for chests, apparently; benches and dumb bell usage at capacity. Went for 4 sets on the windmills because I forgot to video one. Strict OH pressing is humbling, especially at tempo. They felt good, but the last reps on each were hard. Failed on #4 on the last set; didn’t get it past my pony. Bench felt strong, as did the rows. All the things were turned on by then, and coupled with the sweat and the mirrors, I felt jacked and I am sure that makes the weight feel lighter. Subbed DBs on the RDLs as all the BB were in being used.

W | Some cursing on part C; but I found the grove and kept going. I can’t believe how much I feel the bear crawls in my abs! Correct position = game changer.

F | Monsoons are rad. And make for really sweaty morning after hikes.

Sa | Been a while since I’d done box squats. Took some vid to make sure my form was on point. Modified the barbell hip thrusts to SL versions, because (A) the latter are harder – though the load is significantly lighter so maybe I fucked up the intended stimulus… (B) The smaller diameter of the hex plates makes the, uh, mount on the hip thrusts less convenient. I know, laaaame excuse.

The EMOM was challenging – really had to focus on recovering my breath the last 5 rounds or so. Opted for KBs as the head of the DBs @ 30# are out of control…

Su | Trunk sesh because oh man, those box squats got me sore. The holds felt strong, as did the TGUs.

Mind Mold(s)

“Limits, like fear, are often an illusion.” – Michael Jordan

be_LIE_f_S
Somehow it’s been almost 4 months since I made the switch from training at a CrossFit affiliate to a “corporate” globo gym. Dang, that went fast. I wish I could say my mental adjustment went as swiftly. It took some time, some good questions (surround yourself!), and some self-reflection, to get on board with it all. I continue to gain insight into my fears and resistance to the change.

The dudes at Barbell Shrugged recently sat down – well, stood up – with Katy Bowman of Nutritious Movement, who has lots of interesting ideas on movement – which is not to be confused with exercise! What has stuck with me this round are her thoughts on body casts – everyday objects in our lives that we use/wear without question and that literally shape us in ways most of us are unaware of. Things like shoes, pillows, even our chonies, have impact not only the way we move, but change our physical shape. Where my girls with bunions at?!

The conversation about body casts and our unquestioned buy-in on their use got me thinking about the other beliefs we hold onto without question; those “I am _____” or “I am not  _____” statements. I am an athlete. I am a good person. I am a healthy person. I am a smart person. But what does any of that really mean? How are you – how am I – extrapolating those ideas?

A few short months ago I would have used all of those aforementioned “I am” statements as arguments against working out at a globo gym:

The people that train at globo gyms are lazy.

They aren’t athletes.
They don’t know what they are doing.
Machines and mirrors are silly and useless.
I am better than all that.

I think it was Tim Ferriss who said, whenever I find myself thinking in absolutes, I look for the exceptions. Are any of those statements fact? And secondly, what does what other people are doing  have to do at all with MY training? Nothing. I mean, what others are doing in the gym, at work, in their relationships, in their lives – yep – none of my fucking business.

It’s funny how the change of venues has me noticing other casts in my life. Change begets change, right? What casts are limiting you? Which ones can you start shaking off? (Might I suggest you begin with the chonies…)

Tu | Feeling some progression on the BU presses. Failed on the 7th rep on the right with the 25# kettlebell… and couldn’t string more than a couple together on the right. But still an improvement from the 15#er. On the DB things I often feel, in hindsight, that I should have done more weight. I’m not sure what’s that about, but what it does tell me is to be mindful of how things feel while I am doing them. Am I cheating myself? Could I do more? Notes for next time. The RDLs were challenging. Musta been the hex plates #globojokes

W | Tuesday night dinner prep soundtrack was all about breath, and was fresh in my head when I hopped on the bike (all the step burrito’s were taken, so shook up the order of things a bit). Explored my breath and that was interesting – hadn’t noticed how much I like to mouth breath. There was a learning curve on the KB walk; took awareness not to death grip that KB. Felt better once I stopped.

Th | Haven’t gotten the best sleep this week – staying up too late on a school night attempting to get shit done – and was feeling it by the time Friday Eve training sesh rolled around. Also, The Pope talks about the lady times and their effect on strength; that felt like a real thing on the front squats. Here’s the footage of sets four and five, both at 120#:

The right side was the limiter on the FR lunges. The burn on the zerchers felt really nice; felt it a ton in the booty. Lots of trunk action on this one, too, front and rear.

Sa | Super sore in the booty and thighs rolling into the session. Part B had me breathing really good. Five rounds + fast forward + fuuuuh!…

Su | Rolled through and had some fun. Had a moment of getting on myself for not fighting for the last two DL reps, and for not getting under the snatches, but let go of that shit. Today was not a test day, well, except for testing the “girls”; so much padding and levers. No, I didn’t keep a straight face.

Why do I look like I got lost on my way to a barre workout?

I got owned by work today and didn’t get a chance to finish my thoughts on the post I was planning to share with you today, friends. So, instead, as a nod to all the storming, you get a monsoon-y quote and some words to suck on. (Too much? Welcome to summer in the desert.)

The Moment
by Margaret Atwood

The moment when, after many years
of hard work and a long voyage
you stand in the centre of your room,
house, half-acre, square mile, island, country,
knowing at last how you got there,
and say, I own this,

is the same moment when the trees unloose
their soft arms from around you,
the birds take back their language,
the cliffs fissure and collapse,
the air moves back from you like a wave
and you can’t breathe.

No, they whisper. You own nothing.
You were a visitor, time after time
climbing the hill, planting the flag, proclaiming.
We never belonged to you.
You never found us.
It was always the other way round.

W | Weird rapid heart rate on the bike – too much coffee? Abs on the suitcase carry had me woke. Worked on a slower more controlled mount to HS – starting with hands on floor.

Th | Bench felt weak, but it’s been a while… not a whole lot of forward pressing in my life right now. Same with the pull-ups. They made me a little grumpy. “Hmm, what’s that about?”, she asks herself. Favorite segment (not that I need to hand out awards for my workouts) was the D. The crossover step-ups were sweet and revealing. Also, made you look globo-ers.

F | Subbed time on the bike for the erg due to some lower back fatigue. Subbed FLR for the bear crawl because the turf area was bangin’ (or other appropriate slang term).

Sa | Sore in some new regions of the glutes from the crossover’s I do believe…

Still haven’t tried any of the globo good/bad girls… Who needs dem bishes, anyway

New ritual: 10-minute morning yoga before getting meditated. I might be in it for the handstands, and the shorts, but it sure has been a nice way to kick of the day.

Arrival at failure or a power pose?

Fair warning, I’m gonna do that thing where I string some seemingly random threads together. Yes! I’m making you an afghan blanket just like grandma used to make. It’s for the summer-in-the-desert Netflix and AC chill. We all know it’s best done sans pants and when the blower kicks on, that ish gets drafty. Brrr!

Oh man, off to a good start, Gunz.

Aight times tres.gif
My weekend ‘flix binge

Let me set it up. The internet went down last week at my office. Then the server. And the phones. The daily dose of streaming music had yet to make my daily moments of gratitude…. Until about noon on day 1 of downage (let’s make that a word). When the only sound in the room is the click of your mouse and the voice of a well-meaning but over-sharing coworker, you become hungry for any noise rapido.

I’m pretty sure this is the only time I will ever say this: Facebook (and unlimited data) to the rescue. The first thing in my feed was this conversation with My Girl Kate (Galliett – not actually my girl, but we’re vibing in a limbic resonance kinda way, at least one-directionally):

Isn’t it interesting, the split screen comparison of the backdrops of each human… Hmm. What’s that say about each? *eye brows* Anyway, I really like what Kate had to say, in particular on the matter of our human desires to go “right to do the handstand” in life – resisting or disregarding all the tedious, boring, crucial, delicious (choose your adjective and your mindset) work it takes leading up to it. The dudes at BBS touched on it this week, too, the “rush to greatness” and the desire to just do the cool stuff. I think we can call that Insta-itis. Friends, I get the fever, too.

The allure of all the shiny, shiny shit on Instagram got me thinking about a dude whose work I was introduced to in a theory of architecture class during grad school, Guy Debord. His work, The Society of the Spectacle, is all about “the gaze”. Courtesy of Wikipedia (which does a way better job of summarizing it than I can. Throw them some bones):

“Debord traces the development of a modern society in which authentic social life has been replaced with its representation: ‘All that once was directly lived has become mere representation.’ Debord argues that the history of social life can be understood as ‘the decline of being into having, and having into merely appearing.’ This condition, according to Debord, is the ‘historical moment at which the commodity completes its colonization of social life.’”

Sounds like the moment is now. Though maybe it’s best we converse on the matter. Maybe over a scratch meal…?

My last random thread (Fuuu… that’s gonna be one comfy blankie) is about the eats, the value of home-cooking. Did you know last year Americans spent more money in restaurants than they did on groceries. (Right. This means zero grounds for bitching about the cost of groceries.) I couldn’t agree more with Tamarkin’s take on meal delivery services, but man, there’s so much more that “goes to waste” when you’re not involved in the process (note that rabbit hole, those of us who gather our meats and veggies from a retailer). Similar to the joys of suffering through a workout, the task of creating with others fosters more that the “thing”, it feeds that connection to your people. It’s like time under tension, but with food. Shared effort for the win.

I’ll leave you with this behind the scenes from the man with the bongos, who totally gets why a person might wanna keep an afghan (little “a” friends) handy on the front porch.

F | Morning hike was pretty fucking sweet. Felt good! Was pleasantly surprised with my capacity and recovery.

day of the donut.JPG
National Day of the Donut… Taco… Pancakes

PM sesh… The DLs felt really strong and easy off the floor. As noted previously, part B is pretty nice cardio. I dropped weight on the SL hip bridges when I noticed I wasn’t able to completely open the hip at the top (a point the emphasized) on the left side. Did the pull-downs with the long bar grip. Yep, felt em.

Decided to hit the scale in the ladies locker room. Results: 163.3. It’s just a number, but I think I’m still gonna do Friday weigh-ins for a while #collectingdata

Questions: I would like to put on some muscle. What do I need to delta to make this happen? What am I missing? Why are my priorities not reflected back? Why does “D-backs” sound like “D-bags” e’rytime? How do they make coffee that has notes of peanut butter and chocolate? And does that still make it Paleo?

Sa | My butt is real sore from the repeat workout. The cleans felt nice and speedy, so much so that I wanted to see how they felt out the bottom. Dropped some lbs and finished the last 3 sets with a tall clean. I was feeling very “technically proficient” compared to my compadres in the “functional training area”. Do you even know what you’re trying to accomplish there, bruh?

sure would.png
The KnBUKB press (Nailin’ the acronyms – next up greeting cards and paint colors) are pretty solid on the right and crap on the left. Workin’ on it, man.

Su | Low back spoke to me a little during the row… Hike? Deadlift? The combo? But things felt fine on the extensions and lunges. How the eff do people hangout in the hammie trap between sets?!? I lept outta that contraption as soon as I fucking could each round. Fire! Mirrors are totally helpful during the Zerchers.
