And Then

In a former life this would have been “It’s five o’clock somewhere”

I’ve found myself stressed the fucked out the last few weeks; feverishly working through a task with a running list in my head of all the other shit I have to do. And then, and then, and then…

And then I realized how I was creating all this stress myself.

Check out this podcast episode of On Being with Ellen Langer, “The Science of Mindlessness and Mindfulness”. It covered many things I enjoy – like how much we are led by language, in the way we communicate with others and in our internal dialogue. Example time. Rather than asking yourself “Can I [do that thing]?” instead try, “How can I [do that thing]?”. Not only does it change your answer, it changes what you are willing to consider; it leads to multitudes rather than an end. I also really liked Langer’s suggestion of looking for evidence of the opposite – with a situation, an idea, a problem. How could it be otherwise? Where is the evidence of the other? Whatever you look for, you will find.

I suggest downloading the unedited versions of the podcast; the awkward moments that naturally happen in conversations… keepin’ it real.

Th | If I were to give this workout a title it would be, “Fuuuuuuh: I’m sweaty”. Why are bear crawls so intense? And why does the stepmill make me so effing sweaty? Dude at the globo noticed the CARs in my warm-up and introduced me to PAILs and RAILs. Just the very tip so far…

F | Where are my triceps?

Sa | Feeling Friday’s work in my upper mid back.

Going to test the 12-hour eating window again and it’s all Rhonda Patrick’s fault.

Interesting stuff. We’ll see what is gained, or lost, or a wash…

There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,

M | Subbed the stepmill for the erg because of hip flexion. Right side bugging a little from the move. Part B: I see what you did there. Booty burning by the last 5 reps of hip bridges. I would like to conduct a test. Remove all the TVs from the globo and see what occurs…

Tu | Dang starting with pull-ups = prefatigued. BTN press felt stronger than anticipated. Typically aren’t those harder from a seated position than from standing, no? This whole workout was a good practice in preventing straining neck face.

W | An hour of barbell fun! Deficit deadlifts felt really good; why do those weights feel so much easier standing on plate? More/different muscle recruitment? The push press was the limiting factor on the second part, and after all those pull-ups on Tuesday, it’s hard to straighten my arms today. The squats felt solid. No GHD to Roman extensions.

Sa | Favorite.

As you approach the point where Inner Basin Trail hooks up to the Weatherford Trail you get a pretty sweet view – from top down The Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater, Sugarloaf Peak, The Fairy-tail Forest.

M | Went into this one with my eye on that row; it was surprisingly enjoyable. My focus was: your nose is for breathing and your mouth is for… eating. Worked to stay aware of my breath, and not rushing the release. My split time was 2:18. Last round of bear crawls I went back to the breath; that shit was winding me more than I think it should have. Braced breathing, man that did the trick. The right shoulder wasn’t feeling the taps on the handstands. Worked on kicking up and staying in place, using my fingers as a guide. The end.

Tu | The KB work in the warm-up felt slow and not snappy. Found some rings for part B! But those fuckers were mounted really wide, which made the already challenging holds, really tricky. Fucked up the sequence and reps on C and D. Feeling like fatty this week.

W | The KB work bugged my lower back a little. The remainder of the workout felt really good, though. Those marching pallofs were totally humbling. It was crazy to feel the stability shift from side-to-side; strength on one, less so on the other.

Th | Much soreness in the booty today. Gunz, that’s a lot of area to cover, could you narrow it down? Absolutely. I am here to help. Find your hip dips (Fellas, grab your lady for demo, if she’s down). Now slide your fingertips toward your coinslot about three inches. There.

The remainder of this week’s training sessions composed of moving all day whilst packing, moving all day whilst loading, unloading, and unpacking, and moving all day whilst unpacking and cursing myself for having so much crap. Moving. Turnover. Get it? Pretty NEAT. Bahaha! Fuck, I am on fire…

Looking forward to a training session IN the gymnasium today.

And look at this! Back when I was introduced to turnover related to the barbell…

Choice or Chains?

“Choose not to be harmed and you won’t feel harmed. Don’t feel harmed, and you haven’t been.” –Marcus Aurelius

Kids Getting Hurt might be my favorite thing on the internet right now. (Thanks, Matty Nice!) The (delayed) reactions caught on the record, also interesting; “Is this where I’m supposed to cry?” Nah, kiddos, let’s choose laughter.

On his latest podcast episode, Robb Wolf hit up Gretchen Rubin for a chat about The Four Tendencies. If you’re wondering what the fuck The Four Tendencies are, I don’t know what to tell you. I expected more outta you. That not helpful? Fine. I was just playin’ anyway.

The Four Tendencies is system that identifies different ways people react to expectations. My tendency is Rebel (though I lean a little to the Questioner). Rebel is the tendency of choice. No, not like the meat. That would be Prime.

lots of marbling.gif

According to the framework, Rebels “resist all expectations, outer and inner alike. They act from a sense of choice, from freedom. They resist control, even self-control, and enjoy flouting rules and expectations. They sometimes frustrate others—and even themselves—because they resist any expectation, even one that’s self-imposed. Rebels resist habits, but they can embrace habit-like behaviors by tying their actions to their choices and their identity.”

I think that last line is particularly compelling for me, personally, as I can struggle with doing that to an extreme, chaining myself to one particular identity or another. As someone who is also resistant to change – not just expectation – that can be an issue. Listening to the podcast was a good reminder for me about the importance of owning that knowledge about myself, then taking a step back and looking at a things, people, a situation, and maybe a belief in a different light, from a different perspective.

“Most misunderstandings in the world could be avoided if people would simply take the time to ask, ‘What else could this mean?’” -Shannon L. Alder

So yeah, choice – it’s e’rywhere. What are you choosing at this moment? What are you chaining yourself to?

A: The sofa! It’s football season! (Or did we just go a little BDSM? Pick a safeword. I say “Trump” – if that doesn’t make your dick limp, I don’t know what will.)

W | Deadlifts felt good. It’s crazy how much more I am feeling the pushing through the floor. Felt them a ton in my lats. Then to move onto the kneeling press. Ooh. Had to be mindful of hip positioning with those. Toughest move of the workout were the good mornings. Was curious about my form, but forgot my phone to captcha some footage. The reverse flies are also a weak spot. Ten seem light, but I do a neck thing when I go up to 15#ers, so… Ten it is… For right now.

Th | Pre-training status: feelin’ the posterior chain, particularly the low back and hammies. I enjoyed the sequencing of this session, part A was like a second warm-up. Ish. Those KB RDLs got my QL speaking on the left side. I notice that happens when I do the kangs, too. Noted. I am really feelin’ (both senses) the concentric lifts. And my lifters. Subbed dip holds because there is a serious lack of places to hang from at the globo gyms. DB snatches sure get my heart rate hard.

Sa | It was a nice day for a hike.

Su | It was a nice day to push a sled. I don’t know how much the sled weighs, nor did any of the employees manning the joint. So those numbers posted are the plate weight.

“Spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation.” -Robert H. Schuller

I’m not sure I’m going to connect all the dots in this post. Basically, I have some shit I want to get done, and I’ve spent entirely enough time with my own thoughts this weekend. But here goes…

A section of my current read created some imagery that has been ruminating in my mind. The author, discussing the ability of shifting from the subjective to the objective in terms of self, compared that skill to that of zippered costumes:

“By stepping outside ourselves, we gain perspective. We become objectively aware of our costumes rather than subjective fused with them. We realize we can take them off, discard those that are worn out or no longer fit, and even create new ones. That’s the paradox of selflessness – by periodically losing our minds we stand a better chance of finding ourselves.” – Kotler & Wheal, Stealing Fire

I’m not gonna dig deep in the consciousness stuff, I’ve just alice-in-wonderlanded in it myself. But this idea of the subject-object shift came up in a podcast I really enjoyed recently. Idn’t that funny how that works?

The guests in this episode of The Paleo Solution Podcast discuss subject-object awareness as it is applied in movement – specificaly BJJ – and in education and critical thinking. Some of the conversation reminded me of parts of Sam Harris’s, The Pleasure’s of Drowning, so check that out if you listen and are hungry for more.

Is your preparation actually preparing you for the real thing? Are you kata-ing/air-punching at life? Are you applying what you learn? Which illusion are you choosing?

Tu | All swole and veiny from the curls. Way too many office donuts.

Sa | TGU warm-up to remind myself I am capable of things. Man, that row burned by flutes hard.

Su | Shockingly sore in between the scapula while mob-ing to start. Where’s that from? Perhaps holding on to some tension there. Felt really good to work it out. The squats felt good, but holy “cardio”. The reverse lunges – not heavy in weight, but right in terms of the neural drive. I was feeling the Saturday Cossacks during those. Was super fun to snatch at Globo Mountain, even if it was just the BB. During stretch I learned Christina works in finance, is going to Austin on Wednesday, works primarily with men, sat at a desk for 10 years, and got her outfit on sale from Old Navy. All without even trying!

On Repeat

smile babe-01.jpg

Prepping for some fresh Game of Thrones by recalling my favorite lines from the last episode: Little Finger dropping some strategy…

Also fitting words having just witnessed the CrossFit Games finale – Mat Fraser on repeat! I wonder how many scenarios he ran through in preparation.

Beyond the Baelish bombs, this episode of Hidden Brain played in my head more than once this past week, as it was a real fight to find my work flow. A contributing factor might be the summer intern – so many (really-good-and-thought-provoking-but-incredibly-distracting!) questions. But, I also attribute the rapidity with which people fire-off emails – and expect a response – to the interference.

AND important.gif
A repeat

I think we all get how distracting being “connected” can be. The new perspective that intrigued me was the message that the phone, the email, the social media itself isn’t necessarily the concern –  it’s our anticipation of them all. Those looping thoughts running in the background, “Has Susan RSVPed to the lunch-n-learn we’re having five weeks from Thursday?”, “Did Joanie see that link I shared which clearly demonstrates publicly my superiority on that thing we were talking about in private?”, “I wonder how likes my post-workout cheese grater hands have accumulated in the last 4 minutes?”. I exaggerate, but you know the ones; those back-burner thoughts that we often aren’t conscious of, that prevent us from taking our thoughts to the next level and getting into “deep work” mode.

I also thought the part about changing your physical environment in order to cut out the distractions was meaty. I’ve never felt more justified in wanting a “deep work” cabin in the woods to disappear to.

It might take some time before I can build my own Olson & Kundig. In the interim, I’m going to explore finding my own place to escape to – who’s got suggestions?! Do you have a place to which you disappear to focus and get shit done? What about that space allows you to do so?

Tu | Tuesdays are for chests, apparently; benches and dumb bell usage at capacity. Went for 4 sets on the windmills because I forgot to video one. Strict OH pressing is humbling, especially at tempo. They felt good, but the last reps on each were hard. Failed on #4 on the last set; didn’t get it past my pony. Bench felt strong, as did the rows. All the things were turned on by then, and coupled with the sweat and the mirrors, I felt jacked and I am sure that makes the weight feel lighter. Subbed DBs on the RDLs as all the BB were in being used.

W | Some cursing on part C; but I found the grove and kept going. I can’t believe how much I feel the bear crawls in my abs! Correct position = game changer.

F | Monsoons are rad. And make for really sweaty morning after hikes.

Sa | Been a while since I’d done box squats. Took some vid to make sure my form was on point. Modified the barbell hip thrusts to SL versions, because (A) the latter are harder – though the load is significantly lighter so maybe I fucked up the intended stimulus… (B) The smaller diameter of the hex plates makes the, uh, mount on the hip thrusts less convenient. I know, laaaame excuse.

The EMOM was challenging – really had to focus on recovering my breath the last 5 rounds or so. Opted for KBs as the head of the DBs @ 30# are out of control…

Su | Trunk sesh because oh man, those box squats got me sore. The holds felt strong, as did the TGUs.

Death Maiden
Death and The Maiden | Pierre-Eugène-Emile Hébert

This week’s c-a-r-d-i-o time was spent ruminating on The Tim Ferris Show with Esther Perel. While the title reveals the focus of their discussion, the nearly two-hour conversation touches on a variety of topics, as is often the case on Ferriss’s podcast. I thought Esther’s differentiation of “revival vs survival” of traumatic events and her elaboration on “eroticism as the antidote to death” were really illuminating. It’s an engaging conversation, but then, perhaps I’m sucker for conversations on conversations – and on relationships and how they (and in turn, we) shape our experiences. Aside from all that Esther is a great storyteller! And not just because I’m also a sucker for an accent.

The podcast reminded me of this scene in Mad Men for a few reason. What is it that you want to say/tell? What’s in a definition?

And as the comments that follow the audio of the podcast reveal, it might leave you with more questions than answers – the good ones always do…

Tu | A & B felt good. The front squats were not my best; on the 4th rep at 125 I really caved forward. Suspecting the mirrors – focusing on the visuals rather than feeling the movement – I turned directions in the rack and the last two sets on the second wave went much better. The barbells at the ballpark are slippery fuckers and make the snatch-grip tricky even with straps. Regardless, I really felt those in the upper glutes.

W | By the time it was time for training on Wednesday evening, oh man, the soreness from previous day’s work had started to show itself – sore adductors, booty, quads, in that order. The lighter load was nice. The CARs felt pleasant (the internet tells me that’s “Controlled Articulation Rotations” for those of you thinking about talking tow trucks right now, as was I). The shoulder ones felt really good; the hip ones… I am not sure I was doing them right. Other than the bear pose I didn’t feel any stretch or opening up. Maybe it was just the encore presentation, and when I try them again I’ll find the way.

Th | Really, really liked the Z presses. When I watch the footage of myself on the pull-up machine I really see my traps fire, but I swear when I perform them I feel the initiation in my back. That finish at the top though – tricky with the bent knees… I want my feet in front of me. Maybe I should practice #Mayhemism

Sa | The cossack lunges during mobility felt the strongest they have in a while. I did not have barbell over my head – this shit amazes me:

Failed at the star plank; they totally jack my lower back on the “bottom” side. Did them from my knee which felt like cheating but still so. much. squeezing (and shaking) in the flutes so can’t be all bad. Not sure how that helps what is weak that prevents me from doing it straight-legged though…#notesforTommy

Curious how I could measure 80% for 5:00 at a time, I used the heart rate grips periodically during the bike intervals. I’m accustomed to PRE for AD sprints but this is new, so just testing shit out. During the 80% intervals my heart rate was between 135-140 and during the recovery segments it was between 106-108. It was funny how much my music could help or hinder my RPMs! Also, have you ever paid attention to the lyrics to Pumped Up Kicks – totally dark and fucked up. No wonder I like it.
