Begin(ner) Again

“You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it.” -Margaret Thatcher

New things shaking up the balance of chaos and order in life right now; I’d forgotten what it’s like to be a beginner at something – which obviously means I need to pursue it more. I’ve been mulling over this talk from B. Petersen (thanks, TG).  Timely considerations on the power of humans to posit and go after the potential in life, and the sacrifices we make in order to do so. And that question about earning the right to identify with an idea, testing it in your own life to see what of it, well, yeah… begin again.

Tu | Serious DOMs from Sunday, especially in the high and ousside boo-tay. Snatches felt super snappy, but then that’s moderate lbs, so… math. Part C = abz.

W | Front squats felt really good, as did the zerchers.

F | The RNTs with the band pulling out were crazy, especially on the left side. Couldn’t get into position with the 30# DBs on the bench, that right shoulder is still having it’s moments, but provided I kept the lbs down a bit, there wasn’t any pain. I think the lat machine is the busiest one in the joint; but hooray for Friday night! I got it all to myself. The hanging from the bar on D shot my grip before my abz, fo sho.

Sa | Jerks were the limiter on the barbell. Having been doing many jerks… and I could tell! But the cleans felt really great, though that’s pretty light for ma cleans. REALLY felt the DLs in the glutes, and then every contraction of my hammies on the GHR after. Those. Were. Painful. (In a good way.) Right side is the limiter on the bi’s – wanted to stop working on the last couple reps of the last two rounds. Made some faces and that did the trick.

Su | Started a cardio workout, had a thing, ended up getting in some movement with an hour long YouTube home yoga flow.

M | Part A had me sweaty as hell; singles are not my forte. Push press felt good, the shoulder really forced me to utilize the dip. Shoulder wasn’t having the dips, so made it into a hold. The new-to-me planks were work, lots of activation in the trunk.

I attempted them with the 8lb hammer but the transition from around to over the head… tricky. Need to shorten the lever.

W | Oly vibes were strong, though the OHS were not. This is not surprising considering the seven sets of pressing on Tuesday. Not the best sequencing, Morgan. I want to re-test part ‘A’ down the road.

So many things in motion; it’s exciting times! Recent maneuvering in my work sphere has me rediscovering the catharsis of hand-drafting; the focused action that lets you lose your mind, in a good way.

My design school mentor used technical drawing as a first move with any project. His method was straightforward: find your inspiration (often a building plan), place it on your site, and literally copy that shit with your hands and a lead holder. It’s amazing the things you pick up from doing this – scale, the gesture, the procession.

What I like most about this method are the unknowns – the things you pick up that don’t reveal themselves until later on in the timeline – the slope of a roof-line, a collection of columns, the way light patterns a surface. It’s essentially trusting that the time you invest now will benefit you in some way down the road, whether you recognize it or not. For me it parallels the idea of “acting out the narrative” that Jami Tikkanen brought up with the Aussies this week. Check it.

My latest copy job is courtesy of the greats Enric Miralles and Carme Pinos and their Olympic Archery Range in Barcelona. Check that, too.

Clean + jerk felt really good and I got a 10# PR there. PR’d my clean with 150#, but just couldn’t nail the jerk. But I know it’s there… So  yeah, EMOMs – the new method for establishing 1RMs.

The front-to-back squat sets were interesting; good feedback on what parts “stick”. So much abs on the front and all the booty on the back version. Here’s some footage of the first set:

The slam ball, snatch, row was not fast. I’m out of practice with the CrossFit workouts; there was zero touch’n’go on the snatches.

[Re]Write the Day

“There are few of us who have not sometimes wakened before dawn, either after one of those dreamless nights that make us almost enamoured of death, or one of those nights of horror and misshapen joy, when through the chambers of the brain sweep phantoms more terrible than reality itself, and instinct with that vivid life that lurks in all grotesques, and that lends to Gothic art its enduring vitality, this art being, one might fancy, especially the art of those whose minds have been troubled with the malady of reverie. Gradually white fingers creep through the curtains, and they appear to tremble. In black fantastic shapes, dumb shadows crawl into the corners of the room and crouch there. Outside, there is the stirring of birds among the leaves, or the sound of men going forth to their work, or the sigh and sob of the wind coming down from the hills and wandering round the silent house, as though it feared to wake the sleepers and yet must needs call forth sleep from her purple cave. Veil after veil of thin dusky gauze is lifted, and by degrees the forms and colours of things are restored to them, and we watch the dawn remaking the world in its antique pattern. The wan mirrors get back their mimic life. The flameless tapers stand where we had left them, and beside them lies the half-cut book that we had been studying, or the wired flower that we had worn at the ball, or the letter that we had been afraid to read, or that we had read too often. Nothing seems to us changed. Out of the unreal shadows of the night comes back the real life that we had known. We have to resume it where we had left off, and there steals over us a terrible sense of the necessity for the continuance of energy in the same wearisome round of stereotyped habits, or a wild longing, it may be, that our eyelids might open some morning upon a world that had been refashioned anew in the darkness for our pleasure, a world in which things would have fresh shapes and colours, and be changed, or have other secrets, a world in which the past would have little or no place, or survive, at any rate, in no conscious form of obligation or regret, the remembrance even of joy having its bitterness and the memories of pleasure their pain.” – Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

Oh my god, that’s a long one. But seriously… ❤ Oscar Wilde knows how to assemble the words.

I’m a big fan of the new day, new start mantra. The sunrise is the perfect reset. That being said, I am totally guilty of having something from the previous day, or even a crappy dream, carry over into the following day.

This very thing threatened my Saturday morning. I’d planned a hike, but even as I pulled up to the trailhead, part of me wanted to turn around and crawl back into bed. But I kept asking myself, “Is that really how you want to write the day, Morgan?”. I parked the car and it ended up being one of the best hikes of that trail that I’ve done! Good decision.

Such a great vibes weekend. Saturday’s gym session was fantastic; Matty Nice was in the gymnasium! Whaaat. Was fired up from the hike so I did an EMOM workout (stolen from a workout from last week that I didn’t fit in) to prep for O-Lifting. That first position on the deadlifts was… intense. Okay, so were the other two. Really had to focus to keep the shoulders back. Ellie Mayhem and I kept one another in check. Nothing to report on the other movements other than that the hip/back/shoulder/tricep are feeling good.

My Sunday trip to the Superstitions was amazing. The pics don’t do it justice…

Also, I can hike for miles without a misstep but as soon as another human is in visual range, that’s when I’ll fall on my face. True story. It’s like when you’re having a scandalous conversation with your lady friends and as soon as you get to the good bits, the joint goes silent and you’re the one yelling “Anal!” at The Yard.

Lastly, after listening to the latest Barbell Shrugged Podcast Version 2.0, I gotta eat more oatmeal. After O-Lifting.

Supergirl Little Itch
Image from the series Secret Life of Heros by Greg Guillemin

If given the choice between two superpowers – the ability to fly or the power of invisibility – which would you chose? That question was posed in Superpowers, an episode of This American Life. John Hodgman argues this seemingly simple question may be a verbal rorschach, flight revealing the confident hero, invisibility the pervy villain crouching in the corner. Normally I’d have gone with the power to become invisible. But this week I’d choose flight. Next stop, Chile.

I took a quiz to find out which superhero I am. Sailor-Mouthed Architect didn’t make the list.

Wednesday’s workout was cathartic; keepin’ it fresh, TC. I had three people chat me up in the parking, inquiring what exactly I was doing (Pulling a sled, doy). The cartonero in the little green truck asked me why I was doing it. Ah yes, first world functional fitness. Thank you for the perspective, friend.

When you stop to consider your place in the world

Friday-turned-Saturday’s Workout was more challenging than I thought it would be (doy). The heavy KBSs coupled with the PUs had me breathing a little hard, which was quite unexpected. I did hand-release trying to keep my quads from touching the ground. Get-ups were good as usual. Tacked 5:00 on  the end to work the bottoms up; totally have those down pat on the right side (with the 26#er) but still a work in progress on the left.

Sunday I did a nice little scramble of a hike then hit the ‘nasium. Honestly, my intention was to try the bear complex. But rather than this:

It felt a little something like this:

So, I just kept it light and moved my body a little – a few rounds at 75#, some DUs, mobility work, stretching and foam rolling.

The new year meets whatever nasty bug is going around meets the horrific shit happening in this world and it leaves me taking stock. And searching for words… I think this fella has the right idea.

Really enjoyed the article on the blog this morning, “Is Your Fitness Pyramid Wrong?” (Though I think the author is a little turned around – the mobility is the base, not the pinnacle, of the pyramid. C’mon! Words matter!) Anyway, it lead me down an internet stream during which I discovered… wait for it… the Core Ninja Principles for Supreme Life Mastery. It’s amazing what 37 minutes on the internet can yield. It’s a great read and a nice balance of profound shit and curse words and who doesn’t love that. Yin and yang, indeed. You can also find an interesting read on the militarization of fitness on that site, too.

Monday I learned that two-a-days are for special occasions. I am still feeling the hollow rocks from Tuesday, which is a nice feeling and actually helps on all the handstand work as it makes it easy to tell when you’re properly engaged. Speaking of the Handstand Challenge, so far the hardest one for me has been the second day:

Staying locked out like that for 30 reps is really hard. Also, her elbows freak me the fuck out.

Wednesday’s recovery was awesome. It was beautiful outside and the sled pulls and tire hits were a nice combo. Had some interesting feedback during Thursday’s workout. The COB holds resulted in me losing feeling in two fingers for the remainder of the workout. Clearly I have some shoulder stuff happening. The single leg lunge work was a great reminder of how on point I have to be with position and movement. The “old lady” aka “Tony the Tiger” hip is feeling stronger, but still doesn’t move the same as ma’ good side.

The sleep has been awesome and I will work on keeping it that way.
