Tu | The hip/crotch/upper-inner thigh (do you need more descriptors?) region felt good once I got going, though the movement pattern on the right side felt a little janky on the death marches. KB snatches keep it real – no cheatin’ that movement without repercussions. The row sprint paired with those were some fun times.

W | The jerks felt the best they’ve felt, maybe ever; fast, solid, and with a good finish. (One can’t just walk away from a jerk joke.) Felt like I was able to fire away and take my head out of the equation a bit.

W | Booty status at the start of the session: all kinds of sore. The first opportunity to work from jerk blocks! That’s some handy shit for gauging one’s dip. Also makes putting the bar down fun. Like dropping a mic; very dramatic.

F | Man this workout was pretty humbling. The prowler push followed by the OH carries fatigued my upper back and shoulders fast, thus the reduction in KB size each round. I’m pretty sure the first 1/3 of the time I wasn’t in the proper position pushing the sled. And warming up with TGUs, not sure that was the best idea either. Learning moments. And fall weather, prowler pushes, and the super moon make for a pretty sweet Venn diagram of a workout. The middle gooey part.

Sa | Worked on opening up my stance in the catch position on the snatches. Helped immensely. No air brakes, well, less air brakes. I think I’m protecting that hip, but the wider stance feels good, so hopefully changing that pattern will set things in better motion. Speaking of brakes, it’s so funny how that happens with pressing. Sixty-five felt challenging, but not crazy… seventy got about 1″ off my back.

Tu | Felt every muscle in my booty and hammies traversing the stairs into and out of work. The class workout was some much needed recovery. The BS felt sooo good, solid. Fired up in a very good way.

Adding protein to your morning hot cereal is a terrible idea. Trust me, you won’t wanna stick it in your mouth. Protein powder in water: good – or at least chuggable. Baaab’s Creamy Hot Cereal: so tasty. Together: like a cement mixer that won’t get you drunk.

Really focused on the sleeps this week and the timing and quantity of quality eats.

Still some soreness in the lats on Saturday, and still working on getting to the gymnasium early enough to be warmed–up and ready to lift when class starts. Some tightness in the hip at the bottom of the snatch so those stayed lighter. Focused on speed and widening my stance in the catch. The cleans felt really solid. The jerks were light with the sore lats; like I couldn’t get those guys to fire as fast as I wanted. Really want to push my comfort level on that overhead stuff. Once the body is feeling ready for 100%+ effort again.

Monday’s workout made me wanna vom. Felt good.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a KISS fan, and up until a week ago I didn’t know who the fuck Paul Stanley is. Then I had a listen to his conversation with Joe Rogan (see below). I’m a sucker for a discussion on communication. It’s crazy how casually we can throw our words around, and equally so how selective we can be about picking them up from others. Use your words.

I liked the exchange Rogan and Stanley have on therapy, growing up a “freak”, why self-help books don’t work, clear communication (!), and why we all need friends who will tell us when we’re being an idiot. Especially important during these presidential election/Pokemon Go times.

Sa | Took back-to-back rest days then PR’d my front squat. Hmm. And I really think I have 160 in me, which is a mental marker because it’d be over body weight. The iso holds and jerks felt good, too. The last segment just felt awkward, but I’ll chalk it up to new movements.

Su | Session felt good; soreness in the upper back between the blades from Saturday. Zerchered so hard I couldn’t feel my thumbs during the sprints. Those AD sprints felt really solid, which caught me off guard after the O-lifting iso’s. But maybe the two are unrelated. Please discuss.

I like that photographer’s work. It reminds me of being a kid in the backseat of the Grand Marquis (the one that Mom murdered a deer with once) driving through town from dinner and cards at the grandparents house, me peering into the houses as we passed. Even then I liked checking out architecture. And people watching.

I also liked this Mind Muscle Project Podcast episode about the magic in your guts, detoxifying sleep, and the hydration wolf.

F | Not so much energy today. Gotta get that sleep back in line. Fought the scap wings on the chin-ups. For the amount of calluses I have on my hands, those fuckers sure are delicate. Grip on the bar was a contributing factor. Seventy-five felt pretty heavy on the beeeinch until – on the final set – I really focused on the keeping my glutes engaged. Last set, best set.

Sa | The usual post-chin up feels in my right shoulder. Cleans felt solid, but the second jerks on both sets of 125# were ugly. Or at least they felt ugly. Dropped lbs on the last set. Feeling like I need some jerk work. 

This week I have to re-prioritize the sleep. And try to up my hydration game with this end of days heat we are having. Still trying to find my warm-up groove for O-lifting. Step one might be headphones.

I really enjoyed Tim Ferriss’s interview with Paulo Coelho. Have you read The Alchemist? The Pilgrimmage? Eleven Minutes? A few of my favorite reads. The interview is really fantastic, touching on matters of procrastination, flow, being in the moment, and trusting your process – you can’t push the river. Paulo keeps it real.

Notes | My calves are still sore from the raises on Monday. Things felt a little hebby and slow; by the end of the barbell work I felt fried. On a positive technique note, I can’t believe how much grounding myself better has changed how the movements feel. Moving in the other direction on technique, I crotched myself on the second set of snatches really fucking hard. Post-lifting at the casa called for ice to-the-crotch and carbs to-the-face.
