In a former life this would have been “It’s five o’clock somewhere”

I’ve found myself stressed the fucked out the last few weeks; feverishly working through a task with a running list in my head of all the other shit I have to do. And then, and then, and then…

And then I realized how I was creating all this stress myself.

Check out this podcast episode of On Being with Ellen Langer, “The Science of Mindlessness and Mindfulness”. It covered many things I enjoy – like how much we are led by language, in the way we communicate with others and in our internal dialogue. Example time. Rather than asking yourself “Can I [do that thing]?” instead try, “How can I [do that thing]?”. Not only does it change your answer, it changes what you are willing to consider; it leads to multitudes rather than an end. I also really liked Langer’s suggestion of looking for evidence of the opposite – with a situation, an idea, a problem. How could it be otherwise? Where is the evidence of the other? Whatever you look for, you will find.

I suggest downloading the unedited versions of the podcast; the awkward moments that naturally happen in conversations… keepin’ it real.

W | For future reference, when program calls for hammie curls – workout at Globo Mountain. Hamstring machine situation at Tang is mediocre. Back squats. Can’t believe how great they feel.

Th | If I were to give this workout a title it would be, “Fuuuuuuh: I’m sweaty”. Why are bear crawls so intense? And why does the stepmill make me so effing sweaty? Dude at the globo noticed the CARs in my warm-up and introduced me to PAILs and RAILs. Just the very tip so far…

F | Where are my triceps?

Sa | Feeling Friday’s work in my upper mid back.

Going to test the 12-hour eating window again and it’s all Rhonda Patrick’s fault.

Interesting stuff. We’ll see what is gained, or lost, or a wash…

Gravity Facts

“You can’t start a fire, Worrying about your little world falling apart.” -The Boss

how is yous

Continuing down the multitudes of you, you, you path I seem to be meandering, some recent questions were fired up from Hidden Brain. This week’s episode was a little bland – I struggled to relate to the real life examples they gave – but there were still some meaty bites in there.

The first piece I’ve been chewing on is called Odyssey Planning. Essentially, it’s developing 3 completely different variations of your 5-year plan, and then using those articulated alternatives to take action in a new direction. Again, combating this idea that there is one path, one plan, one self. I like it.

The other spark was that of “gravity problems” – problems that we get stuck on that really aren’t problems at all:

“If it’s not actionable, it’s not a problem, it’s a circumstance. Once you accept your gravity problem as, in fact, not a problem but a circumstance – maybe a difficult one, maybe a heart-breaking one – but just a fact, you free yourself to go do something you can do.” -Dave Evans, Designing Your Life

What would the titles of your three Odyssey Plans be? Do you have any gravity facts weighing you down?

Tu | Feeling really good post hike. Sore in the calves hips a little bit. Rearranged the workout sequence because they need more racks at Globo Mountain. Hammer curls: burn like a MF in the bi’s and make for veiny arms. Failed on the very last rep of the bench press; was a solid 5s iso hold.

Th | The row time passed surprisingly quick; really focused on my form – not cheating the release. Wall walks are still fun; performed the last 2 unbroken in an effort to better my first “step”. Cossacks didn’t feel great on the right side; not painful, just still feeling some fatigue from The Hump, so I subbed overhead walking variety.

F | Is there an advantage to using an incline bench for reverse flies? I just do them bent over… Bike felt really great. As did the get-ups. A nice session to head into the weekend with.

Sa | Kept it light and speedy on the snatch sesh, as it’s been a while. Things felt good. The last half of C my flexors were trying to be glutes, and made the last set power snatches for that reason. I need a glute switch. Some delicious post-workout hammie quivers – washed down with a burger and strawberry malt with the crew at Joe’s Farm Grill (which was also delicious! And holy smokes – those trees! <3).

Su | The weight felt smooth until that last attempted rep at 200#, and then they all felt harder. Not moving that datum much, but feel great – all three H’s – so, I say, “so what”.

M | As I worked through the barbell complex my low back didn’t loosen up at all; it was feeling really sore when I ran the roller across it in warm-up and I noticed how tight it was whilst on the AM dog walk sesh. It was an easy call to scrap B & C for some recovery work.

Sa | Sometimes smaller is nice – at least when it comes to weight increments of the KBs. Feel the burn of the RNT lunges in my adductors and quads – is that the goal? After all the BS the lunges were intense, despite having lighter KBs than I’d typically grab. The only matching pair of KBs at Globo Mountain Ballpark Edition are the 30s; the struggle is that the 35# DBs have enormous head. Not sure how I’m gonna rack that… But I am sure I can figure it out.

Su | The row was surprisingly zen, and fuck did it burn my booty. Lots of fatigue in my really low back – more so on the right side. The mulitifidus? Not sure which muscles they actually are, but on the map of human anatomy that’s the region I’d point to.

multifidus penalty.gif

Dropped down the OH carry weight on the last two rounds as I was doing the neck strain thing #traptivated Felt really good sashaying out of the gym into the blast oven of the desert.

M | BTNs are crazy: feel all the activation, then dead stop fail. No mas! The DB snatch movement pattern is getting smoother as I’m finding it easier to keep shoulders and hips in alignment. Why does Globo Mountain Ballpark Edition have ONE slam balls, but 102 options of wall and medicine ball – which are both referred to as the latter?

Tu | Bike made me sweaty. Silent bear crawls fatigued e’rything. Some confusion on terms left me doing two “C” rounds. NBD

The Chinese, always with such intensity. I think Seth might say they fucked that one up though. (Relax! Check out all the things they got right. And Wiki doesn’t even mention Bruce Lee, weightlifting, or turning gypsum board into food.) Seth’s proverb says, “Fear is who we are. Tension is who we are becoming.

Tu | Had to rearrange the sequence of events based on availability, but things felt really good and strong.

W | Rolled through. Felt the row in my booty instead of my back, which was a win. Everything felt good – especially the handstands >>> handstands FTW!

F | Feeling like I shoulda edged up most of the weights for this workout: heavier KB on A; gone for 60 on B; stacked a 2.5# plate on top of the KB for part C… Interesting to me that the BU KB press and SA row is harder on the left, but on the BTNs and DB bench my right side is the weak side. Hmm.

Recently got my grill shined up. The dental hygienist – who’s been cleaning people’s teeth for 34 years – asked how old I was when I wore braces. I asked how she could tell, because it sure isn’t perfect alignment of my teeth (No, I don’t wanna reel that one in! Stop asking #flavorsaver) She said there were subtle marks where the wires had subtly scored my teeth. It got me thinking about people, and how we are an accumulation of witness marks. It makes me curious about what people pick up on. And who we pretend to be.

Sa | Hip bridge holds are no joke. And make for edge-of-your-seat video footage. But seriously, try them and see how good you are at keeping your hips level. The back squats were fun with a mirror. Not sure the last set was “x1” out the bottom… or a full 2-count either. The pull-up machine is gonna lead to some gainz, I am sure of it.

Su | New places of soreness in the lats and booty today.

Had fun testing the barbell at the globo, thank you. Felt super weak with the snatches until it occurred to me that I was using a 20 kilo barbell. Ahh. The fifth set finally felt nice and smooth and fast like they’re intended to be. The pulls felt slow but seemed okay via instant replay, so I stayed at 175#. The machines at Marina Heights are a little different than the ones at the ball park; your seat moves with the contraction. Check out the rocketship.

The leg extensions were SO intense after the barbell work; the curls less so. Also, Marina Heights has stall bars… Forgot to check on the sled.

M | Kinda weird working out at the ball park when there’s a game going on – think fishbowl. The whole place breathes a roar when the plays are good. The modern Colosseum. Rolled through the workout. Cut out “C” due to time restrictions. Lame.

Feeling chubby in the middle; time to reel in the eats and unplug.

Sorcery

Attention squared
Know your sources. Where’s that coming from…?

The last couple weeks have presented me with many opportunities to be an observer… of some new surroundings (gym anthropology) and of myself. Truth be told all of life gives us that chance, right? But are we paying attention? And are we open to seeing the full spectrum of things presented to us?

I really liked this article Raymundo shared with the DTP crew, Every Movement Is a Skill, If You’re Listening. That’s not actually the title – it’s a way better one! Read it and tell me I’m wrong. It reminded me of a recent exchange between The Aussies about movement and how it is – and isn’t – like porn: it’s not about how it looks (okay, it’s a little about how it looks), it’s about how it feels.

So let’s rearview: you gotta be open to it (new methodology – globo and that other thing) and engaged in the process enough to feel it, not excessively focused on what it looks like in the mirror(s) or from inside your box. You get all that?

Of course you did.

Tu | So uncomfortable…

W | The RDL into hip bridges had me (and the Zor-cerer… Yep. That WAS dumb!) breathing nicely and all kinds of day-after sore (speaking for myself on that last part). Exploring the pull-downs, thus the all-over-the-board on the lbs. Got too heavy and started repping all janky-like so I backed off and refocused on feeling the initiation of the movement and where I felt it down and up the chain as the movement progressed. Also… abz.

Th | The swings felt fantastic and the reflections (So. Many. Mirrors. And sneaking lighting that makes you look jaaacked! Magic tricks, indeed.) were fun. I really enjoyed blowing the dust off my gym jams for the “cardio” portion.

Sa | I am perplexed and excited by all the contraptions for squatting at the globo. Aaand I eyed a floor-mount for landmines! I’m digging all this new stuff to try. The tri’s and bi’s really revealed asymmetry in movement and how/where I feel them. The leg extensions and curls… slayed me! I’m am beginning to recognize how the globo cycle has the ability to add to the toolbox, not taking away from the work I’ve already put in. And man was it fun to wrap up with some of my favorites – the TGU – after doing new things!
