Tu | Not feeling it; fought my head the entire time in the gym.

W | Came in for Oly, warmed-up, but the hip/back was not having it. Called it.

F | Just wanted to move. Things felt good, but still can’t load that right side at the bottom of the squat. PT with Handsome Matty set for Monday. The extra ankle strap on the banded hammies REALLY helps (me to) feel it in my hammies and boo-tay. The reverse flys look really easy on tape, but man did I feel the burn mid-back during (and two days later). Check out this compelling footage:

Sa + Su | Continuing to get in some movement, whilst avoiding the squat.

Th | Totally fucked up the components of the workout, switching the Zerchers and the push press. A blossoming sinus infection reminded me of the importance of breathing #mouthbreather. Digging the KB work. And was surprised at how much I got the shakes during the Pallof work, which I did split with rig facing leg forward.

F | Was thankful for the lighter day; had it been any more work, I’d have taken a rest day. The ring dip holds are really challenging; fought for 15 seconds each round. Phase II sinus crap turned then pistols into a cardio session.

Sa | Wasn’t a spicy day with the barbell; failing at 95# was a pretty good indicator. Had the air brakes in full effect. I don’t get it; I’m mobile enough to get low with a load overhead; why am I not able to get there in the receiving position with the snatch? Many more reps to come. And lifting shoes. Here’s a compilation of the heavy singles:

Was perusing for some old lifting vids and stumbled upon some pics from the last nutrition challenge. Thought it’d be fun to take some currents and compare. The lighting and threads are different, but I think I see the delta; I certainly know I feel it.

Routes & Detours

“We can spend our lives letting the world tell us who we are. Sane or insane. Saints or sex addicts. Heroes or victims. Letting history tell us how good or bad we are. Letting our past decide our future. Or we can decide for ourselves.” – Chuck Palahniuk

refer to the map
Maps for life. The tricky thing about referring to them is that one runs the risk of confinement of thinking, leaving less room for exploration…

Clearly my mind could use a map. Cut me some slack, friends; it’s Friday.

So, lots of life path talk on the radar this week. Really enjoyed this episode of The Tim Ferris Show on knowing what you want and not getting distracted by the paths of others. Paired that up with the latest blog post from the TTT on learning from your mistakes, your missteps, your detours. The author focused on learning from coaching mistakes, but man, I found his points to be applicable to my own experience, in the architecture, and elsewhere. Especially that last one.

Some of us have a notebook of knowledge, and others a diary of detours, but ideally both, right?

Tuesday’s squats felt good. A little fight to keep the lockout on the OH carries by the last round. Worked on relaxing the non-working arm. And ma face.

O-lifting was good; feel like I’m stronger out of the bottom, but continue to work on the speed under the jerk. Ali had some interesting thoughts on why I struggle to stay braced sometimes on the heavier jerks – the gymnastics finish with the tilted hips.

The Take Away

tumblr_nit1ostqni1smfk4no2_r1_540

There’s a quote credited to Michelangelo that goes something like, referring to his famous masterpiece, “David was always there in the marble, I just took away all that was not David.”

Hold that thought. And now read this guy’s story. He went from living in a 2-story house to traveling around the world with 25 lbs worth of gear. While I wouldn’t call his lifestyle “practicing poverty”, I think the minimalist mentality has a certain level of preparedness built in. The less shit weighing you down, the more freely you can move, whether by choice or necessity. I think his story is pretty interesting, particularly his thoughts on the accumulation mindset, and how habits – both positive and negative – carry over from one arena of our life into others – gym, home, work, relationships, mindset…

So what are the things you can take away? And what have been the moments in your life that seem to “chip away” all that isn’t “David”? The ones that strip away all the first world problems and excess? The ones that challenge you to see what’s really underneath?

Monday | Just rolled through. Notes for Raymundo: that right tricep still isn’t firing right; really noticed it on the reverse fly.

Wednesday | Felt nice and speedy on the cleans, challenging getting outta the bottom on those last two sets. Will feel that one tomorrow, especially paired with the split squats. Speaking of, those felt solid. Kept the weight light as they have been known to blow up my shit (the right QL) if I am not cautious.

The side bridges were revealing – SUPER challenging. In order to keep everything stacked properly whilst feeling it in my booty, I needed to drop to my knee. Despite the modification it was still difficult. At about :20 my glutes would stop working and I could feel my low back taking over so I stopped there each set. Also, playing around with that, I found that from the elbow was SO much harder than if I did it with an extended arm and my hand on the floor.

Lastly, Smart Ryan coined a new phrase for the feeling you get when your big movers are letting you know they’re working – the booty call. He’s good to have around.

Not getting the best sleep this week, so I didn’t push it on the plates. The tall jerks felt much strong than last week’s did, especially the second rep. First rep warm-up! Focused on my footing on the BS; still amazing how much more drive I feel like I have. And that it took me 4 years of hearing the cues to have it sink in. Ooooh. Practiced my pirouettes on the HS holds, and was reminded not to be a little bitch on the yumps by Sprouse. Thank you, Kyle.

Left the gymnasium, went home and fixed the most delicious steak I can remember eating. So I took a pic. #duh or maybe #ugh…

SPUDs

“What horrifies me most is the idea of being useless: well-educated, brilliantly promising, and fading out into an indifferent middle age.” – Sylvia Plath

One of my favorite new podcasts is Note to Self, “a tech podcast about being human”. My most recent favorite episode was about LEGOs, which I have loved since I was a small human, and no doubt played a role in my choice of professions. Bold colored blocks with which you can create anything! Or you can just leave them all over the floor for your nemesis to step on. Brilliant.

The podcast episode debates the evolution of the LEGO, from “free-building” into kits. (Bullshit gendered kits, I might add. ) It was a very interesting conversation; many audible “Yeeees!”s from this chic. I particularly liked the part on the addition of SPUDs. Those would be “Single Purpose Useless Decoratives”.  Hey I know a few of those! What a great acronym of what not to become. SPUD: the Lego version of the DNBs.

In other news, James Clear has provided me with the solution to my portfolio creation problem: portfolio (sans) pants!

The hips are still recovering from my week off in the frozen tundra. I was sore pretty much all last week in the lats and the hip flexors. Added some shoulder taps to the wall walk on Tuesday. Those samurai squats were rough Saturday. I feel them in my low back on the right side, WHICH I KNOW IS WRONG! And I added some GHRs to yesterday’s workout, because I am a hypocrite. Trust the program.

I really enjoyed hopping into the class workouts. It makes it easier when I am feeling not so into it, which usually directly correlates with the temperature in the gym. Hoping to be more focused at the gym this week than I was last. I’m making a comeback from the holiday season! Fucking holidays.

Gonna do some food logging for the next 30 days just to get back on track. And I’m gonna try to keep a lid, or cork, on the scotch until Superbowl SunYAY. Also going to shoot for fasted mornings 3-4 times a week just to see how it affects things. Working that metabolic flexbility #staybendy
