dem denny rules

Tell me, where the fuck did the weekend go? I’m not sure it’s that I have so many ideas, or just so much I wanna do. Either way, it’s time to get out the blade and trim that rose bush. And remind myself: I make the rules.

M | Found out my shoulder woes are just a flared up delt. Whew. Doc Z’s Rx:

Tu | We’ll call this new benchmark workout “The Stand(ard)”:
Tuesday Benchmark NFTW | This was a nice quick workout. And it felt good. Amazed by how much better my shoulder feels already.

Th | Felt good during this one, too; That five rounds made me sweat. Did you mean SA DB PP? I did snatched because I have never been assigned SA DB PP before. And that seemed like a low rep scheme… Did I fuck that up?

Sa | Wanted to workout Friday but after work I was so freaking tired. Checked my app, and yep. 5 hours of sleep both Wed and Thursday nights. So, no workout for me. 8.5 hours of glorious sleep instead. This no doubt made Saturday’s workout more of a win. Was pleased with how smooth DUs felt – been a couple weeks since they’ve felt that way [verify]. Noticed on my WW vids that I need to get my hands under my shoulders more. TGUs felt so good. Really, really please with how my shoulder is feeling. That delt is definitely simmering down.

Su | Did some barbell things. They felt good.

Goals this week: Get my brain off junk food

Tu | Workout felt good. Pressing on the right side weak out of the bottom. Man, KBS feels good, as do dem zerchers.

Th | Sumos felt gooood. PR! Hammies sore from Tuesday. Don’t think I’ve ever felt the split squats so much in my glutes and hammies – solid. The DUs felt awkward and clunky and I was squeezing my shoulders, so I dropped some reps. The movement felt better by the completion of the EMOM. Just a little rusty… and maybe a little fucked up from heels all week.

F | Weak. As. Fuck. Not happy at all with how this workout felt. Eeked out four rounds on part A; felt awful, and not in a challenging way, in a nothing wants to work way. Where my lats at on part B. And felt like my body with two halves on the rower. So much so that I stopped and did intervals on the stairs. Here’s to tomorrow being a new day. And to setting up some shoulder PT.

Sa | Was the person starting up Camelback at the time I am usually gone and sipping coffee in the sun. The company was worth it. It’s good to mix it up.

Su | Feeling the RFESS in the booty. Didn’t want to work out. Did it anyway. The day turned around.

Tu | Canyon calves in full effect. Felt so good to foam roll. You better believe the booty and the hip didn’t bug at all… over due for some brit brit.gifThis workout smoked my upper body; started with the push-ups – it’s been a while. Continued with the OH pressing and deeeips – it’s been a while. And finished with the hanging from the bar… felt like I could barely get my hands over my head. Hahaha! But felt good to move. Need to get back in a consistent routine.

W | The DLs felt good… until I want to do the KB carries on part B. Mid-back on the right side was not having it. Adapted to just keep moving. Where duh fuc did my motivation go for realz? Still feeling zapped…

F | Increase in the desire to be at the gym today, which felt nice. Really liked part B. The dips and pull-ups felt way stronger than they did Monday – maybe more recovered from the Canyon? The longer time on the McGill makes my neck hurt – gotta investigate where I need to adjust that. Fuck my noggin is heavy.

still
Brit Brit with the neck demo. Man, she always comes thru…

Sa | Warm-up – good. Snatches were feeling a little rusty, with the first could sets being power snatches. Seven set was the best snatch I’ve done at the globo! Got all the way under it – no power. Some might call this a squat snatch, even. Obviously, those people would be wrong, and we would classify them with the people who hike blasting their shitty music. Anyway, got in position for the next set, created tension in my arms for the pull and oooooh mid-back on the right side – so angry. This has happened before – on that side, with the snatches – so I took the rest of the workout to the stairs and am hoping a little rest is the Rx.

My coach really is from the future, and knows his shit; stress and barbell equal a bad idea for this chic. A good reminder to shake off my ego, and lean on my coach’s knowledge, experience, and outside perspective.

Su | Actually wanted to go to the gym today. Of course you did, Gunz, because even the slightest of injury reminds you what it’s like when you can’t… Anyway, didn’t have a plan just wanted to move and see how things felt. The back felt good – a little tender on that side with the foam roller, but I didn’t dig in. Mobility and warm-up felt good so I went for it – the rest of Saturday’s workout, but light. I subbed a longer session on the bike for the stairs since I did a bunch of that yesterday, and miiiiight go for a sunset hike after I get a few things done at work. Yeah you read that right.

Entanglements

“All stories are about wolves. All worth repeating, that is. Anything else is sentimental drivel… Think about it. There’s escaping from the wolves, fighting the wolves, capturing the wolves, taming the wolves. Being thrown to the wolves, or throwing others to the wolves so the wolves will eat them instead of you. Running with the wolf pack. Turning into a wolf. Best of all, turning into the head wolf. No other decent stories exist.” – Margaret Atwood, The Blind Assassin

Hiking in The Sups

M | Still feeling those zercher squats. And that lighting in the rower area for the gym. I admit its more fun doing SA snatches when you see your reflection looking jacked – and your muscles firing. I did seven KBS because I just didn’t read my workout clearly.

Asked a dude how long he was going to be on the platform. He came back at me with a “Are you going to workout seriously? Because, I am, ya know, just kinda screwing around so you can use it if you want to <laughs>…”

seriously.gif
Tu | Mind was tired. Got the body to the gym. It was crazy how “easy” that 215 came off the floor. It was like squeezing the trigger – the ‘bang’ surprised me. Sled felt great as did the McGills.

Sa | This was rough and I bargained with myself right from the start. How about I just take out the the taps. Maybe I’ll just do five rounds. Yes, I did this despite having chosen this one from the archives myself. The last couple times I’ve done this one I’ve 86’d part C; did that again. This isn’t CrossFit after all; no need to win the workout to compromise the plan. Excuses? Nah. It’ll be okay.

Su | This. More. Of. This.

Been reflecting on the week, appreciating what I did well, and finding where I can do it better (which wasn’t a tough task). On the small scale, I didn’t get all my workouts consolidated to the work week as I had hoped, but I did get make time to do the things I wanted to over the weekend. Zooming out, I am recognizing how I can craft my creative process to be a little more gangsta (see previous post).

Field Notes

“Complaining is not a conversation.” -James Victore

suffah

The Fragile Generation >>> It’s crazy how much our successes comes down to our own belief that we will endure. That trust in ourselves, and in our relationships, is developed gradually, testing little by little – poco a poco – in a staggered rhythm of experiences. And isn’t it interesting how both our self-confidence, and often times our relationships are strengthened via the same thing: working through discomfort…

“I believe that people who trust themselves and trust each other are willing to have difficult conversations. You know, relationships are not easy, whether they are work relationships or personal relationships. We may upset each other; we may say something the other person takes the wrong way. I give everyone complete permission – starting with me – to come and tell me directly that I did something they didn’t like… say it in as raw of a way as you want – you don’t have to figure out how to say it, you don’t have to wait until you calm down. But if you are incapable of doing that, if you are only capable of passive aggressive behavior… consider this your last warning.  -Arianna Huffington on the new HR Dept

Tu | Didn’t have tons of energy or excitement heading into The Tang. Told myself to just mobilize and move and see how I felt. Did that between every part… and got through them all. Okay then. I think my 75% is a little more than 120, but there’s only one way to find out 😉 Both part A and part C got me breathing pretty good, but in different ways.

W | The front rack carries are so much tougher on the right side than the left. Wicked sore front all dem sqwats on Monday. Stepmill makes me sweat a lot, even when I am not-mouth breathing.

Th | Workday summarized in five seconds:

Gym sesh summarized in four sentences:
Failed on the tempo bench on the 8th rep on the right side. Got thru all of ‘em on the left. Contraction on the left side on the SA row feels really weak in comparison to the right. How’d I get so sweaty?

Sa | Focused on staying checked in on the machines. If I had a globo there wouldn’t be any friggin screens! But I don’t, so there. Part B was hard. Honestly, it kicked my ass. The run on the sled is 30 so I just did that. I figure it’s cheating a little with the carpet so…

Su | Well, the pulls from the ground weren’t stellar. The DL positioning felt better, worked to brace and get in the position at the start there. I gotta work those fails. The first successful rep on the fail vid felt really bad, but in the footage it didn’t looks so bad. Same with the cleans. I got pretty frustrated with myself – so frustrated that apparently I lost count and just fired off five sets of some hang power cleans to appease myself.

The back squats, however, felt AWESOME – the grip with the floor, the drive through the floor, e’rything. Ditto with the BTN work. The hundy plus five was a little spicy, but I should definitely start heavier earlier next go around.

M | Went into this one with my eye on that row; it was surprisingly enjoyable. My focus was: your nose is for breathing and your mouth is for… eating. Worked to stay aware of my breath, and not rushing the release. My split time was 2:18. Last round of bear crawls I went back to the breath; that shit was winding me more than I think it should have. Braced breathing, man that did the trick. The right shoulder wasn’t feeling the taps on the handstands. Worked on kicking up and staying in place, using my fingers as a guide. The end.

Tu | The KB work in the warm-up felt slow and not snappy. Found some rings for part B! But those fuckers were mounted really wide, which made the already challenging holds, really tricky. Fucked up the sequence and reps on C and D. Feeling like fatty this week.

W | The KB work bugged my lower back a little. The remainder of the workout felt really good, though. Those marching pallofs were totally humbling. It was crazy to feel the stability shift from side-to-side; strength on one, less so on the other.

Th | Much soreness in the booty today. Gunz, that’s a lot of area to cover, could you narrow it down? Absolutely. I am here to help. Find your hip dips (Fellas, grab your lady for demo, if she’s down). Now slide your fingertips toward your coinslot about three inches. There.

The remainder of this week’s training sessions composed of moving all day whilst packing, moving all day whilst loading, unloading, and unpacking, and moving all day whilst unpacking and cursing myself for having so much crap. Moving. Turnover. Get it? Pretty NEAT. Bahaha! Fuck, I am on fire…

Looking forward to a training session IN the gymnasium today.

And look at this! Back when I was introduced to turnover related to the barbell…

Know your sources. Where’s that coming from…?

The last couple weeks have presented me with many opportunities to be an observer… of some new surroundings (gym anthropology) and of myself. Truth be told all of life gives us that chance, right? But are we paying attention? And are we open to seeing the full spectrum of things presented to us?

I really liked this article Raymundo shared with the DTP crew, Every Movement Is a Skill, If You’re Listening. That’s not actually the title – it’s a way better one! Read it and tell me I’m wrong. It reminded me of a recent exchange between The Aussies about movement and how it is – and isn’t – like porn: it’s not about how it looks (okay, it’s a little about how it looks), it’s about how it feels.

So let’s rearview: you gotta be open to it (new methodology – globo and that other thing) and engaged in the process enough to feel it, not excessively focused on what it looks like in the mirror(s) or from inside your box. You get all that?

Of course you did.

Tu | So uncomfortable…

W | The RDL into hip bridges had me (and the Zor-cerer… Yep. That WAS dumb!) breathing nicely and all kinds of day-after sore (speaking for myself on that last part). Exploring the pull-downs, thus the all-over-the-board on the lbs. Got too heavy and started repping all janky-like so I backed off and refocused on feeling the initiation of the movement and where I felt it down and up the chain as the movement progressed. Also… abz.

Th | The swings felt fantastic and the reflections (So. Many. Mirrors. And sneaking lighting that makes you look jaaacked! Magic tricks, indeed.) were fun. I really enjoyed blowing the dust off my gym jams for the “cardio” portion.

Sa | I am perplexed and excited by all the contraptions for squatting at the globo. Aaand I eyed a floor-mount for landmines! I’m digging all this new stuff to try. The tri’s and bi’s really revealed asymmetry in movement and how/where I feel them. The leg extensions and curls… slayed me! I’m am beginning to recognize how the globo cycle has the ability to add to the toolbox, not taking away from the work I’ve already put in. And man was it fun to wrap up with some of my favorites – the TGU – after doing new things!

In addition to new digs, people, and methods, I also performed some internet searches I’d not imagined I’d be doing a mere 6 mos ago. Like “seated or laying hamstring curl machine”  or “proper form cable tricep push-downs“. Sources matter – so much contradictory info – so I need to flush out the “Catalyst Athletics” of globo reads.

Lastly, AD hunting on the CL got me like…
